Someone who I knew a long time ago is massively in to this MLM shit, I unfollowed her ages ago so I didn't have to see it all. She's just messaged me a hi hun 👋🏻 post, AIBU to think this is the start of a sales/recruitment pitch?

I wouldn't be surprised.

Run for the hills!

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 23/02/2018 10:24

Ohhhh Yes!

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 23/02/2018 10:38

Sound like it. A girl I met once added me on fb. Thought it was a bit strange after meeting briefly once where we barely spoke. Then I realised she's a mlm. Unfollowed her to hide the bullshit "career mum" "entrepreneur" "this is my office for the day" picture of a coffee shop and positivity "if you work hard amazing thing happen" posts.

"Then I got a pm last week offering me to join because something amazing and HUGE was happening to the company and id want to be be part of it" no I won't. I replied I actually run a real business with my husband and don't have time. She replied "oh wow does that look like it will quiet down soon. The busiest people are the most succesful in this business, if you want to meet for a coffee I can show you how to work this business round your other one." Ridiculous 😂

FlatToTheMat · 23/02/2018 10:39

Excuse my ignorance but what's MLM

DrunkOnTheMOON · 23/02/2018 10:42

What is a MLM?

Because 2 acquaintances in the past couple of months have tried a bit of a 'sell' on me. Which got my back up as I felt almost ambushed...

Wonder if it's same thing

HermionesRightHook · 23/02/2018 10:44

Multi-Level Marketing schemes, Flat - things like Younique and all those stupid juice sales companies. They work by setting up layers of salespeople - everyone at the top takes a cut of the sales of everyone beneath them, in a pyramid. They tend to work very well for the very few people at the top and everyone else loses a lot of money and friends. They have aggressive and manipulative sales techniques a lot of the time.

This does not include companies like Avon - they are also direct person-to-person sales where the seller takes a cut of the profit, but they don't have the multi-layers of people taking cuts; if you buy something from them each salesperson takes the same amount of money and doesn't have to pay anything to the person who recruited them.

Steeley113 · 23/02/2018 10:44

Yep, you are about to be hun-bot’d. Shut her down!

(MLMs are multi-level marketing such as younique. Essentially the new pyramid schemes)

HermionesRightHook · 23/02/2018 10:45

Drunk, that feeling of ambushed does rather sound like your friends are in MLM schemes - the pressure on them to sell to make money for the person who recruited them is often huge so they end up being really rude to their friends to get a sale.

Blushlove · 23/02/2018 11:40

I think she's done pretty well out of it so I'm assuming she's not at the bottom of her pyramid! I'll see how long it takes!

They often appear to have done really well but a lot of what they buy (cars, tvs, manicures, new clothes, holidays etc) are all either paid for by partners working normal jobs for normal wages, on finance or are fake. It's putting a show on to make them seem more successful so that others will fall for it.

ReasonableLlama · 23/02/2018 12:02

I read a blog by ex-MLMer called Elle Beau. It's such an eye opener.

Frolicacid · 23/02/2018 12:03

Does anyone know if body shop at home is mlm? I have loads of friends doing it. Their facebooks are bursting with positive quotes and hashtags. I never knew there was such a market for white musk in one small town Hmm

Curtainshopping · 23/02/2018 12:05

Appearing to be doing well out of it is a major part of their strategy.

This blog is a brilliant behind-the-scenes.

thetemptationofchocolate · 23/02/2018 12:31

Even those at the top end of the pyramid are not necessarily doing well. A lot of it is fake.
