To ask you to help me find this book? (Possible trigger)

I read it at least 20 years ago and I’m fairly sure it was in a readers digest book (I was a tad precocious as a child)

The basics are:

Written in the first person, from the perspective of a young female doctor who worked with children. One child had a lump on their testes and it developed into cancer.
The cancer went into remission and I think the mum got pregnant again.
Eventually though (either in the first book or a sequel) the cancer came back and the boy died.

The reason I’m looking for it is someone close to me recently died and for some reason I’m really quite fixated on finding this book from my childhood.

If anyone could help I would be eternally grateful.

The bit I remember the most is the scene where the child died. He waited for his mum to pop to the garden and was laying on the sofa and then he passed away. It was a really beautiful passage of writing if my reaction 20 years ago is accurate.

Hi was this story fiction or non fiction. Trying to have a look online for you.

It wasn't 'go towards the light'? That was a readers digest book with similar story.

I’m fairly sure it was fiction - if not it was certainly written more as memoirs than it was totally fact based.

Go towards the light seems to be about a child with aids?

This was 100% about a child with testicular cancer. I remember a line about she checked all her other patients for lumps even if they came in for a cold (which was a bit odd now I think of it) he recovered the first time but then they found another lump.

I’m sure mum was pregnant at the time as well

Omg I found it!!!

I -shamefully- found a website that lists all of the readers digest stories every published and as soon as I spotted the title I knew it!

A parting gift by Frances Sharkey

Off to see if I can buy it!
