To ask if you'd be contacted re paedophile case

Have name changed for this, but have been around for years (yoni man, naice ham, Pom bears etc).

I'm trying not to drip feed but I can't be too identifying about some of the elements because they're not publicly available, but don't really affect the question, and I don't want this to be too searchable so will minimise a fair bit.

We found out yesterday (been out of the country so missed a lot of the media furore) that someone who has been in very close proximity (as in a few metres), over many years (think in a neighbour capacity) to my family, has been prosecuted and imprisoned for a litany of crimes. One of things he did was rig cameras to film people going to the toilet and the shower and getting undressed.

My question is that would we have been contacted by the investigators if there was any footage of us (we would have been overlooked and potentially in view of the internal cameras, and we also have the same access to communal toilets and showers)?

Part of me thinks that I don't want to know. Another part assumes that it would be completely unreasonable for the police to contact everyone involved.

I think I'm just looking for answers to try and make sense of it in my head. I feel sick that my daughters have been around someone so utterly evil and I'm trying desperately to reassure myself that I don't need to worry about him having had images of them.

No harm in calling the police to ask!

PurpleOctopusT · 21/02/2018 07:38

I think I know the case you are referring to and I’m so sorry you’ve been anywhere near someone capable of that absolutely horrific.
I don’t think your mind will rest until you’ve had reassurance from the police so I would contact them but I would have thought if they had reason to think you had been affected they would have contacted you first so hopefully in this case that’s a positive sign.

Thanks both. I'll perhaps let it die down a little. My dad is talking about getting access to the court transcripts to see if they clarify any more about filming in public areas. Isn't it funny that I was always more worried about strangers walking through with the girls playing out. Although it sounds like his MO was the internet so maybe I should worry less about face to face contact.

With my sensible head on I'm assuming that if any images of us had been re-distributed we would know about it. I can't do anything about anything else he might have, and knowing about it won't make any difference as it's not going any further now.

I Think I know the case :( I think you could ask the police for reassurance, they may not be able to identify some people so havnt contacted them so may welcome the information?

Do you know if theve asked other neighbours?

LondonHereICome · 21/02/2018 08:23

So this person was a paedophile as well?

RedHelenB · 21/02/2018 08:28

Sometimes ignorance is Bliss. Although maybe curiosity would get the better of me. No YANBU.

TeasndToast · 21/02/2018 08:29

If any footage of you or your family is part of the prosecution then yes, you will be contacted.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 21/02/2018 08:33

You could contact the police yourself to ask if there's any reason to think that your family have been victims. I'm not sure how much info they would be able to share with you

I know two people who were interviewed by police in case they had knowledge of historic incidents. Both knew nothing about it, but said they were impressed the police had investigated so thoroughly

We only have access to the property at the end of March. The police haven't contacted my parents who are a few metres further away. My assumption is that the less extreme footage won't get picked apart. I think this morning I've decided it's better not to know.

londonhereicome he has been described as a paedophile in the prosecution I think because amongst other things he encouraged rape of a child.

OP, do be careful not to post information like the above that a journalist could use to identify you.

MerryShitmas · 21/02/2018 09:46

Please do not post further details here - it could get dragged through the papers.

If they can identify you they'll speak with you but if they don't know who you are and. The defendant won't say anything then you may not have been so there is no harm in asking.
