I'm sending a parcel to a DGM who lives abroad for her birthday.
Amongst other things I've made a small canvas with my DCs handprints on it - I'm crap at this sort of art stuff btw so it might be absolutely terrible but I just though she would enjoy something from DCs as such.

I wanted some opinions wether to leave it as it is or add something more to it.

At the moment it's a plain white square canvas with DC2 (smaller) handprint in the top left and DC1 in the bottom right as they wouldn't quite fit along side each other. They're both in blue paint.
They both have their names stamped on in black DC1s is above his print and DC2s below as that's where they fit.

I don't want to over complicate it too much but I have got 3 things I can put on it:

  1. self adhesive half matte gold PVC paper which I could cut thinly and make a little frame around the edges of the canvas.
  2. some pale pink self adhesive lace tape but it might be too girly
  3. some bronzey gold "half pearl" stickers in 3 sizes which I could potentially do something with around the 2 plainer corners of the canvas

Or I could just leave it be.

Suggestions please?

My first instinct is to leave it be. The handprints will be enough on their own.

Could you upload a picture? It might be easier to advise if we can see it.

Snowysky20009 · 19/02/2018 18:41

Leave it- it will be too 'fussy' otherwise. Well done though

NomsQualityStreets · 19/02/2018 19:13

Here's a picture.

Sorry about the terrible quality it's taken on the smashed up tablet.

I think it looks lovely as it is.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 19/02/2018 20:12

I do too. I'd love that Smile

callymarch · 19/02/2018 20:16

Dont add any more decoration, but I would add a date somewhere

HappydaysArehere · 19/02/2018 20:22

I take it it is on a canvas board and not a canvas which can be hung independently. If it is a standard size board you might be able to,get a reasonable priced frame which could finish it off! If not I would leave it alone.

NomsQualityStreets · 19/02/2018 22:16

It's like a canvas with MDF wood (I think) at the back so you could hang it as it is on a nail.

I just get really worried about how people will see it and over think it I think.

Although the gold paper is still calling my name a bit as I loved it when I saw it in the store.

No gold! Step away from the gold! Do not touch the gold! If I git a print like that I’d be chuffed, but I really think by adding gold you’re forcing your taste onto her. She can frame it if she wants in HER choice of frame.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 19/02/2018 22:24

I would add their ages or a date but step away from any trimmings. None would look right imo. It's great as it is.

NomsQualityStreets · 19/02/2018 22:47

I originally stamped paper with their names and d.o.b. and put it on as a mock but it was a bit too wide for DS2 little hand and looked off. Not sure where else I could put them.

Maybe just "February 2018" in one corner?

OP posts:
Riv · 19/02/2018 22:56

That last amazing nom. A date would be a good idea but definitely nothing else. Grandma might want to frame it herself to fit in with her decor, or hang it as it is. Don’t make it too fussy with gold or lace or anything else, it will spoil the effect of the children’s work.

Riv · 19/02/2018 23:00

Looks, not late!
But yes, February 2018 in small writing, or 02 / 2018 bottom left under smaller prints.

NomsQualityStreets · 19/02/2018 23:05

Thanks @Riv unfortunately I only have one type of stamp lettering so it would be the same font as the writing of the boys names.

Would it work?
I also think it might be a nice reminder for the years to come if it has the date on? Especially as it's for DCs Great Great DGM who is 85 and it will then probably be passed down to their Great DGM (my grandma) who she lives with etc

Poppins2016 · 20/02/2018 00:12

Looks as though my first instinct was correct - definitely leave it be - no framing!

Adding a date/age is a great idea though - the same font as the names would be fine. Smile

Pollypudding · 20/02/2018 00:19

It looks lovely. You could put a sticker on the back with dates and ages then would not detract from the prints but would be there for posterity

FingersCrossedHard · 20/02/2018 00:35

Like some pp's, the first thing I thought was that it needs a date. Just 'February 2018' in one corner.

Riv · 20/02/2018 09:34

The same font would be fine. Try out the date formats (2/18; February 2018; Feb 18 etc) on paper and try out where on the picture and which format looks right to you.
And please could you post the final image, It's so lovely it just might inspire a certain mumsnetter to make one of my special small relatives for my birthday!

NomsQualityStreets · 20/02/2018 11:26

I will be adding date today. Sorry to say it will not be in English as DGM doesn't speak it so I will be writing it in her language.

I can still post it though if you'd like @Riv

OP posts:
Riv · 20/02/2018 19:27

I’d really like that - as long as you don’t mind me trying to persuade a certain someone to copy your wonderful idea. Thank you for sharing.

Riv · 14/03/2018 09:24

Just to update you... Your hint worked. I got one. Mine is red and the names are written across the palm so can't really post it without outing.

Thank you, Flowers thank you, Flowers thank you. Flowers

NomsQualityStreets · 14/03/2018 14:06

Awww I'm so happy for you @Riv Smile

Sorry I never ended up posting the finished one but it was pretty much exactly as the one I posted just with a date in the corner.

DGM loved it too btw!
