Films that put mental health in a positive light?

Are there any that exist?

Should some exist?

Perhaps, positive is not always what is needed, but truthful and with less violence portrayed?

Try It’s a funny kind of story. A teen movie but very good. Shows how mental health can affect every day life and doesn’t always have you seemingly bashing your head off a wall.

What do you mean by ‘positive’?

I remember thinking that Silver Linings Playbook was a ‘good’ (for want of a better word) portrayal of mental illness.

I also thought ‘About A Boy’ was quite realistic. But not always ‘positive’.

LittleLostLion · 16/02/2018 12:29

I guess, I meant ones where the movie demonstrates that at times mental health issues can actually also have a positive side to them, and it's not all about axe-wielding murders.

(Just watched Split; I have a dissociative disorder, it was awful)

A Beautiful Mind?

It depends what you mean by ‘positive’. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is apparently meant to be a good, the main character suffers from PTSD.

I saw it a very long time ago so a bit hazy, but possibly shine (Geoffrey Rush)

I'd recommend To Write Love on her Arms, a film based on the life of Renee Yohe. The film details her struggle with self harm and BPD, and focuses on how her friends helped her to develop and grow.
TWLOHA is also the name of the organisation they founded, which helps sufferers of depression, self-harm, addiction, and at risk of suicide.

I'm not sure where the lines meet between 'portraying Mental Illness in a positive light' and a film remaining realistic though, as the umbrella term for all the issues aren't mental health and mental illness for nothing.
