AIBU about renovation quotes?

I want some work done in my home, more cosmetic than repair, and am finding it difficult to get anyone to come and have a look without me telling them my budget first. For example, the guy I've just rung said "How much are we talking?" I said, I don't know, that's what I'm asking you to come and tell me!

Firstly I have no idea about budget, that's why I want someone to come and have a look. Secondly, why do they need to know how much money I am willing/able to spend? It seems off to me, as if they will just quote the highest I can go to!

AIBU just to want someone to come, talk through options, and give me a quote?

I have used a site in the past called mybuilder.com. You just need to put as detailed a description on off the work you want carried out and you will get a number of different quotes from different suppliers. It will give you an idea of what ballpark figure your looking at.

Is it because you're not being specific enough about what you're needing done?

Saying "Can you come and quote for some stuff I need done on the house" could be anything from painting woodwork and repairing broken tiles to replacing a whole roof and building a two storey extension.

Thanks. The problem is I can put in the measurements for painting through, carpeting, etc. but I thought if someone came they might have some more ideas, like adding kitchen cupboards or whatever.

k2p2k2tog Yes, might be. I have some ideas but I'm not a professional. I need some help!
