So they say 90% of breast lumps are benign. I’m only 29 but I have a lump and am currently being seen by the doctor about this, having a check up next week which will likely result in a referral to the breast clinic.

Although I know the odds are in my favour, I’ve heard some awful stories and I’ve started really working myself up. I wondered if any of you ladies (the 90%) could please share your stories of finding lumps and them turning out to be benign. We often hear of the people who have had the worst outcome so I’m imagining all sorts of unhelpful scenarios and it would really help me rationalise the whole thing. Thank you.

Hi, I had one and was terrified as breast cancer runs in my family. Ignored it for a bit as I was too scared to think about it but finally went to the doctor who told me off for leaving it so long! Long story short, I had an ultrasound and a biopsy and it turned out to be a harmless fibroid. Had an op to remove it and now all is well and the scar has almost faded One year on. Fingers crossed yours is nothing to worry about Smile

I had one in my left breast, it was really painful for 2 weeks before my period. It was massive - my left breast was a DD cup in comparison to my right which was a C cup.

I'd had it since my teenage years, but it only became an annoyance after I give birth to DD and breastfed her at 25.

At 26 I went to the doctor who referred me to the breast clinic. They did a 3 step check and the results were normal so told me to come back once I'd stopped breast feeding.

I forgot about it but at 29 my periods changed and the lump became painful again. Went back and my consultant told me they would remove it. It was a benign tumour. The healing process took less than 3 weeks. You can't even see the scar now, and I love that my boobs are nearly the same size!

I know it's difficult and the internet makes it so easy to read up on these things but the doctors and nurses at the breast clinic are so efficient, they know what they're doing and for me that made it easy.

Good luck OP.

I had lumps on my left boob towards my armpit and quite a lot of pain. Got referred for an examination at the specialist breast clinic, then passed on for ultrasound. It was all totally clear and fine, got told I have “very lumpy breasts” haha

Hi Op
I’m 23, but when I was 21 one night I just happened to notice a really large lump in my left breast. Of course I got myself into a right state so I went to the doctor who felt it and then told me that actually I had 2 very large lumps! She told me not to worry but referred me to the breast clinic where they done an ultra scan and confirmed they were fibroadenomas which is just a non cancerous tissue growth. Although they weren’t dangerous I chose to have them removed as they were very large (4x3cm and 4x5cm) which they done via suction biopsy and was no problem. Usually they would be done in day procedure under anaesthetic but they couldn’t do that for me for unrelated reasons.

I hope this gives you a little reassuranceFlowers

I’m 29 too, had a lump last year that popped up from nowhere - felt like a ‘ridge’ at first then got more pronounced. Doc at first said it was just hormonal, as it was tender and came and went with my period. Then literally woke up one day and it was solid. Wouldn’t move. Got a referral to the breast clinic within the week, had bloods, scans, was pretty much convinced I was dying...turns out it was just a cyst that’d moved.

NormaNameChange · 14/02/2018 19:07

Had a lump. I was 23.

Referred to breast clinic, seen within 5 days - had surgery within 10. No biopsy or fine needle aspiration just in for a lumpectomy and woke up on an oncology ward. The consultant was convinced just by its presentation and rapid growth it was cancerous.

12 hours post op the results were back and it turned out to be a big collection of lots and lots of tiny cysts.

I had one over Christmas .. it as a cyst. Worrying during the wait but the stats are reassuring.

PerfPower · 14/02/2018 19:13

I had a biopsy late last year (at 49), it had all the signs of being breast cancer, but wasn't. Just a cyst.

MorganKitten · 14/02/2018 22:21

14 when I found my first lump, it was a ball of liquid they drained the same day as the scan. The liquid was green, but fine.

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 14/02/2018 22:29

I'm a lumpy boober too - hope yours is nothing to worry about Flowers. ive had numerous cysts appear over the years that strike terror into me until they get checked out. Happens so bloody often I may ask for a permit for the staff car park! Everything crossed for you OP xx

Sugarhouse · 14/02/2018 23:15

Yes I found one at 21 was just a benign tumour it’s still here 7 years later although it’s shrank a bit caused no problems. It’s natural to be worried I was but it’s highly likely it’s nothing sinister Flowers

ReggaetonLente · 14/02/2018 23:18

My best friend had one in our 20s - totally benign.

My mum had one in her 50s - she had to go for a biopsy and it was an anxious wait, but again, fine. They were more on it with her than my friend, because of her age.

Loveache · 14/02/2018 23:19

Yes. Found one at 25 and was scared as there's breast cancer in my family. Got it biopsied and it is a fibroadenoma. (Harmless). This year, 8 years later, it was causing pain and I went for another proper check. It's grown 2mm in eight years and has a few cysts in the area, which explain the PMT pains. Still fine, and it's less than half the size it would be before removal would be considered.

Happyland88 · 17/02/2018 23:19

Thank you for all of these messages. They had really helped me feel better. I have a feeling I might not be one of the lucky ones as I’ve noticed tonight that my nipple is now cracked (something which also happened about 6 months ago) and I had a tiny bit of yellow-ish discharge in my bra Sad feeling worried.

I had a lump that needed checked out at the breast clinic. There were 4 women all going through the same tests one after the other - unltrasound, mammogram, see the consultant. All of us were fine.

You are absolutely right to get it checked out - but try not to worry.

EffRam · 22/02/2018 11:01

@happyland88 hope your appointment has been and gone and all well x

LastAnni · 22/02/2018 11:07

Found a little lump at age 38. GP reassured me but sent me for an ultrasound straight away (I drove right from her surgery to the imaging clinic!). They couldn't see anything abnormal on the ultrasound but could feel the lump manually, so I had a mammogram as well. Absolutely nothing sinister found. Just normal breast tissue. My story is statistically what yours is likely to be Smile

Happyland88 · 22/02/2018 11:09

I’ve got an appointment at the breast clinic on the 5th March so it’s just a waiting game at the moment. Its been hard to stay positive with me having a number of symptoms but I’m trying. Thanks for the support.

I had a massive lump (think golf-ball size) in my right breast at the age of 17. Had it removed and it was benign x

JustWonderingNYE · 22/02/2018 11:10

I had a 'breast mouse' too. Loved the name - less so the exam by a much older male doctor who poked it around my tit saying 'Oh yes that's a little mousie.' Yick.

Had a biopsy and scan on the thing - all fine. Got the most terrifying letter in the post before the appointment though. I understand why they sent it but a whole pack on what a distressing time this is and how I need to bring a friend or family member (I didn't) didn't feel very reassuring!

Healthfreak95 · 16/09/2023 14:42

@Happyland88 how did this turn out? I’ve similar!!

WessexPrincess · 16/09/2023 15:40

I found a lump 2 weeks ago, doc referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week rule. Appointment was yesterday, I was examined by consultant who found a further 2 lumps, then had a mammogram and ultrasound and told by the radiologist all ok.
Hopefully will be the same for you OP, tho the waiting is awful 💐
