To force him to take it?

My 3.5 year old needs a course of penicillin. He had one this afternoon and it tasted bad and now is in melt down refusing to have the next lot!
I've got to give him it 4 times a day for 10 days!
I really really don't want to force him to take it but how am I supposed to get him to take it?! Any ideas? Help!

With mine unfortunately it was a matter of forcing for a day until he realised it made him feel better. Found a syringe worked water then treat. Is it the orange one as that is foul. Is it for Scarlet fever

Syringe and promise of a chocolate button straight after. You may well need to put your foot down though!

Doesn't help now but I always ask the chemist for the sugared version rather than the sugar free one. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down and I figure it doesn't hurt when they are sick.
You could ask your doc for a new prescription..

When my dd was in hospital they are see to put it in her drink

Keep.it really cold in the fridge
Give it with the syringe not a spilly spoon
Offerr him a suck on a frube in between medicine squirts
Go to.the pharmacy and ask them to.make you the sugar version as the sugar free is awful and you'll only be bribing him with chocolate buttons anyway

You have to get it in to them whether they like it or not.

You have to explain they have to but that they can have xyz straight away.

Force him I’m afraid. It sucks and is heart rending but you just have to. I had to pin ds1 down with his arms tucked to his side and squirt it in the corner of his cheek and wait till he swallowed it. I hated it but he wasn’t old enough to understand or be bribed with Lego .

Yes, bribing with sweets and/or whatever it takes is the only way.

If he won’t take it willingly you’ll need to force the issue. I found pinning them down and using a syringe to squirt a little at a time into the cheek towards the back of the mouth works best. They can’t spit it in your face then
Medication is something that’s really non-negotiable, and I’ve always made it clear they either take it the easy way or I’ll have to pin them down. It’s not easy, especially when it tastes horrible, but sometimes there’s no other way.

I should add that I only go to forcing if all other methods of bribery/persuasion/ whatever have failed!

It taste foul but yes force him if necessary, but try any form of bribery, doesn't matter if he has too many hardbody or whatever for a few days

I couldn’t get my dd to take hers. There’s only so far you can go - once you get in the realm of physically forcing a child to take medicine, it’s a long way past my comfort zone. The pharmacist told me I could mix it in a drink or yoghurt, but she still wouldn’t take it. In the end I realised she could swallow tablets and she was prescribed those rather than the liquid. Not sure what we’d have done otherwise. It’s grim having an uncooperative child in this situation.

I’ve seen others recommend mixing it in with a spoon full of Nutella and spoon it in.

I second a bit at a time in the back of the cheek so they don't spit it out. At 3.5 you should be able to bribe

Wrap in a bath towel with arms enclosed firmly. Across knee, syringe to back of cheek. Some things have to be done, it’s pretty unkind not to force it down them and allow them to continue being ill for longer.

Why oh why do they not make these medications in suppository form, is beyond me....

Mincemeat tart you might be able to do that to your child 4 times a day for 10 days but I certainly couldn’t restrain a struggling pre-school child like that. Also, mine would see the towel coming after the first time.

I've literally tried everything, I tried mixing it in syrup! In a chocolate drink, bribery with sweets and chocolate, threats of toys being taken away.
My heart is breaking - I eventually tried to pin him and put the syringe in the side of his mouth for a few seconds but he screamed don't do it Mummy, I can't do it! I'm gonna have to ask the doctors tomorrow for pills! 💔 This is just awful!

This happened to me, first dose he took but it was so awful the second was a horror we both cried!
I took mine to the store and let him pick out 20 prizes! (5 you cars in a package counted as 5!) I told him he could have1 prize after each dose. He was very sad when we'd finished the course of antibiotics!

How important is it for him to take it?

The cats day up on a counter where he could sew them. After he took the dose,he got to pick. Sometimesi had to let him hold it before taking the syringe. But it worked.. And at the last dose i had a really awesome transporter truck for him.

I totally sympathise 🙁my almost 4 year old was given the yucky orange one last month....it was horrendous, it took me and my husband to hold him down to try and get it in-even then it didn't work half the time. My son then became really anxious and withdrawn so we had to take the decision to stop it as it was doing more harm than good. Maybe speak to your dr about getting a different antibiotic? The bright yellow banana one is a hit in our house!!
