Nice, new cafe in town have some lovely cakes - triple chocolate with 3 layers, but are charging 3.50 per slice. AIBU to think it's a bit too expensive?

I think it's a lot unless a very nice cafe and then it would be a very occasional treat.

But then I think eating out is a rip off full stop, which is why I choose not to do it!

If it's a nice home made cake then it's fine.

Pearlsaringer · 12/02/2018 14:28

Eat in, fine, eat out, a bit pricey. And I’d want a farmer’s slice, not a dainty.

crackerjacket · 12/02/2018 14:28

All this talk of how expensive stuff is makes me anxious for our UK trip this Christmas!

MyKingdomForBrie · 12/02/2018 14:30

Now I just want cake, thanks!! I’d pay twice that if anyone would bring a slice to my sofa..

LunchBoxPolice · 12/02/2018 18:57

I don't really have a limit on cake.. If it looks good I'm having it.

caringdenise009 · 12/02/2018 18:59

A garden centre near me wanted £5.80 for a cheese pastry. I left still hungry.

lanbro · 12/02/2018 19:01

I own a coffee shop, I make all the cakes myself. Prices range from £1.50 - £4.50 depending on ingredients and complexity. Don't forget you need to factor in time for the home baking, not just ingredients

pringlecat · 12/02/2018 19:03

Perfectly reasonable.

A three-layer cake involves a certain amount of effort and faffing about (I'm not likely to make one myself, even though I could). Plus you said it looks lovely.

I'd like a slice now, please.

CobaltRose · 12/02/2018 19:06

Depends on the quality of the cake. But that sounds pretty reasonable for a slice of decent homemade cake.

userofthiswebsite · 12/02/2018 19:07

I think that's roughly the price of a cake slice/brownie etc in Costa...

DreamyMcDreamy · 12/02/2018 19:07

The cafe near us charges around £4 for a slice of cake. It's freshly baked, they make them all themselves from scratch on the premises, and they're absolutely gorgeous and you get a decent slice.
It seems pricey, but they're well worth it as they have some amazing creations and something new most days!
If it was a slice of "meh" and something you could get cheaper and just as nice somewhere else, then yes,it would be expensive.
Proper nice cake though is worth it!

bakingaddict · 12/02/2018 19:07

Depends on the size of the cake but £3.50 is quite expensive maybe if they did a cup of tea or coffee with that for £4.25 - £4.50 then it's not too pricey

omione · 12/02/2018 19:17

Only reasonable if it comes with free tea or coffee

OlennasWimple · 12/02/2018 19:23

I'd love to know where to get a nice slice of triple layer home made cake for less than £3.50 TBH

HateTheDF · 12/02/2018 19:25

YANBU like another PP said - I'd rather have a whole cake but I'm just greedy.
