To purchase same tv /media unit as neighbour?

My neighbour, a few roads up, after much searching, identified and purchased a fab tv and media unit.

We have a similar house and have not been able to find a unit to fit our space, the one my neighbour has bought would be perfect.

Aibu to buy the same? Dh says lots of people including ourselves have the same ikea furniture. However this unit is not from ikea and is quiet expensive , but it is really nicely designed and would fit the space. I have come into some money so we could actually afford it.

I could ask my neighbour if she would mind if we got the same, but it seems like that might be awkward as she might find it tricky to say that she would mind. They are rarely in our house, but i imagine she would see it at some point.

She did tell me where she got it but presumably didn't expect that we might get the same.

Aibu to copy?

I'd be quite flattered I think. As long as you don't go out and buy the same car, decorate your house with the same wallpaper and get the same haircut, I'd say that would be fine!

ScreamingValenta · 11/02/2018 12:45

I can't see why she should mind at all.

You could mention it to her in the form of 'we were thinking of getting one; would you recommend the unit you bought?'

We’ve got the same as a neighbour. Like you, it fits the space and extensive searching showed that there was very little that would fit and that we liked.

Why not get it and explain to her that it’s because of the space and you really like it. She’ll. be pleased you have such good taste Smile

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if someone bought the same thing as me - if someone asks where I got something because they like it I'm always happy to tell them.

Unless she had it made bespoke by fairies and unicorns, there will be other people in the world with that exact same TV unit.

I might tell her though (I wouldn't ask - you don't need her permission) but a word - 'I loved your TV unit so much I'm getting one the same' would be fine.

Why would the neighbour mind what you bought? It just shows what a great choice she made.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/02/2018 14:28

Honestly, I wouldn't care if they minded or not. It's a tv and media unit available for anyone to buy. It would be ridiculous to be "offended" if your neighbour bought the same one. If you love it, buy it.

Thanks so much all!
I will go ahead and purchase this.
Excited!

Some people are really weird about this kind of thing! My sister had some really nice wallpaper and I asked if I could get the same and she said no!
