Small halogen heater went on fire!

AIBU to expect a pretty new (purchased within past 6 months) heater not to blooming go on fire? Luckily I was standing at the table beside it and unplugged it from the mains. Had noticed this week, that one of the bars were not working, but just assumed it had had its day in the sun. Now I can see why! It must have blooming burned too!

I cannot for the life of me recall where I purchased this thing.

It's a small grey halogen heater with two bars and the brand is ELPINE if anyone has one.

It is by sheer luck I was standing beside it, as if there had been anything flammable within 2m, it was sending sparks flying and I may not have lived to tell the tale.

Using it as there is a gas leak in the mains to the building so will be without gas for a couple of weeks so having to use small heaters. What are the near-miss odds of a gas leak and a heater on fire within feet and a day of each other? Shock
