To ask how you pronounce the word "column"?

I've been listening to the Double Love blog (about the Sweet Valley High books; very funny and scathing, presented by two nice Irish ladies and I recommend listening to it if you need a laugh).

One of the presenters mentioned a newspaper column a couple of times but she pronounced it "colyum" and it's wrecking my head. I say "collum". I asked my husband and he says "collum". I don't think it's an Irish thing as I am Irish!

Tell me I'm not losing my mind and have not been saying it wrong all these years. Collum or colyum?

My Irish partner pronounces it 'ColYum' too. It's just the way they're taught to say it here.

I say 'Collum'.

evilharpy · 03/02/2018 15:50

RestlessLegKick where's here? It's not how I was taught to say it. I don't think I've heard anyone else say it like that from any part of the country but then it's not a word that generally comes up in conversation.

Oops, I see you're Irish too. Well my partner definitely says 'ColYum' and he's Irish too.

He even pronounces vehicle as 'VeHiccle' without a silent H.

RestlessLegKick · 03/02/2018 15:51

He's pretty well educated and he's from the west.

evilharpy · 03/02/2018 15:59

Vee-hicle I've definitely heard lots of times. I'm just thinking it in my head now to remember how I would say it. I don't think I pronounce the H.

I think most of my family are from the east so maybe it is a west thing. Although the podcast ladies are both Dubs.
