A judge has reduced the prison sentence for a nurse who was found guilty on 10 separate serious offences against very young children.

George Robert Anderson, 28, worked at Torbay Hospital as a psychiatric nurse, was jailed for 19 years four months last year.
His lawyers today argued that his crimes took place over just a few minutes and that no lasting physical harm was done to the girl.
Judge Wendy Joseph QC reduced his sentence by 2 years.

Should his sentence have been reduced?
What do we have to do to get men to stop?

No, I don't think the sentence should have been reduced.

Which men? I assume you mean 'how can we stop people abusing children' and not just 'stop the men'.

We can never eradicate it and life meaning life in the states doesn't stop it either. The threat of worse punishments isn't a deterrent.

In the same way we can't stop women killing their children, the best we can do is ensure professionals are well resourced to look for signs early on.

Repeat offences can be stopped by the death penalty or life without parole but they're unfashionable.

Bump.

Stop being pedeantic. You know full well what the OP means and yes ‘people’ abuse children but it’s more likely to be a man who rapes.

BakedBeans47 · 01/02/2018 12:59

Oh my god. That’s awful.

No I don’t think his sentence should have been cut. If the poor child hasn’t suffered long term harm, that’s luck and nothing to do with that vile specimen.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 01/02/2018 13:03

Absolutkry ludicrous he should have a life sentence....

The 3 year old suffered no serious physical
Harm and he raped her quickly FFS

When are the judicial system going to
Protect women and girls properly.

Fucking disgraceful

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 01/02/2018 13:05

jurassic yes bit of you are jailed for life you can’t ever offend again can you do it’s one less bastard out there

Jamiefraserskilt · 01/02/2018 13:05

He chose to take drugs
He chose to rape a three year old child
He chose a child who could not fight him
He chose to violate her physically and mentally
He chose to video it
He chose to watch that video when sober
Five minutes or five hours, he made choices
19 years is not enough

jurrasicPerk · 01/02/2018 13:08

JustVent

In the UK it can only be a man who rapes.

You say "pedantic", I say "words are important".

BakedBeans47 · 01/02/2018 13:08

Women and children in general I think.

I have long thought the value the justice system seems to put on the life of a child is disgraceful.

StealthPolarBear · 01/02/2018 13:10

Oh he was disinherited because of drug use. Well that excuses it. Poor thing. When will people consider the impact on the men in these unfortunate situations?
Hmm

FizzyGreenWater · 01/02/2018 13:12

Which men? I assume you mean 'how can we stop people abusing children' and not just 'stop the men'.

Pretty much always is fucking men though, isn't it?

JustVent · 01/02/2018 13:13

Like I said JarassicPerk, pedantic.

LouiseBrooks · 01/02/2018 13:14

Jesus fucking wept. And this is a woman judge.

I despair.

jurrasicPerk · 01/02/2018 13:14

In the same way infanticide is usually fucking women or knife crime is usually fucking black people.

Stopping men and stopping child abuse are not synonymous. HTH

Thehairthebod · 01/02/2018 13:20

jurrasic are you joking? 98% of sex offenders currently in prison are men. Violence, including sexual violence is an overwhelmingly male problem.

Not all men are violent offenders but almost all violent offenders are men.

Now you can bury your head in the sand about that and keep pretending that women and men commit these sorts of crimes in equal measure, or you can think about how maybe as a society we can stop this sort of shit.

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 01/02/2018 13:21

This is absolutely disgusting, the sentence should not have been reduced.

TatianaLarina · 01/02/2018 13:22

Just how long does a 3 year old have to be penetrated for for it to ‘count’. And what is this nonsense about physical damage, when the trauma of physical penetration will have lasting emotional and psychological damage??

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 01/02/2018 13:24

A small child was raped and violated. The victim has had his sentence reduced for disgraceful reasons. A (probable) man is trying to me-rail this thread and make it “what about the menz?”. It’s not about men and their rights. It’s about this child’s right to justice and other children’s rights to be safe from this disgusting predator.

Thehairthebod · 01/02/2018 13:24

And when women are routinely in the news for sexually assaulting hundreds of male child gymnasts, or raping 100 women and getting less than 10 years for it, or chucking acid at randoms in a nightclub or in the street, or killing themselves before they are due to be sentenced for owning 50,000 images of child sexual abuse, or walking into their ex boyfriends place of work and slitting their throat in front of all of their colleagues, THEN we can talk about 'people'.

TatianaLarina · 01/02/2018 13:26

A (probable) man is trying to me-rail this thread and make it “what about the menz

A probable man who can’t spell his own name. (Jurassic)

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/02/2018 13:27

I know this is emotive. Sentences are determined by the judge applying the sentencing guidelines. The Court of Appeal appear have decided that the trial judge did not apply a sufficient discount for the fact that it was a single attack. We will have to wait to read the judgement before we know their exact reasoning. I wouldn't be surprised it if a technical argument around interpretation of the sentencing guidelines.
He is still serving 17 years and everyone seems to agree what he did was awful.
Wendy Joseph has sat for many years at the Old Bailey and is highly experienced. She doesn't have a reputation for being soft on crime.

BashStreetKid · 01/02/2018 13:29

The courts have to follow sentencing guidelines, and obviously have the full information in front of them. I really don't think anyone can say whether this was right or wrong on the basis of one brief newpaper report.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 01/02/2018 13:29

Hideous. 😢 In a case like this I don't think he should ever be released. Some things are unforgivable and reveal such a depraved character that they should warrant a PROPER life sentence.

000bourneFarm · 01/02/2018 13:30

More accurately the men

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 01/02/2018 13:31

OK, so if the sentence is reduced now, on the basis of no lasting harm, will he go back to prison when the long term psychological damage shows up?
