Redundancy advice...

There's a few aspects to this so please bear with me...

If a company employs someone under one job title and then moves the majority of the department elsewhere in the country but doesn't offer decent enough compensation to move - for example they offer 3k moving costs but no pay rise and it's like moving from a low bill area to London so no pay rise would mean we'd struggle...

They decide to stay with what remains of the department at the current location but the work in that department is pretty much zero to the point where they are now working all the time in another department...

Can a request be made to the company to be made redundant given they are not doing the job role that they were hired for...?

Thanks for any advice, I know it's a tad complicated!

Im not an expert but this link [https://www.gov.uk/lay-offs-short-timeworking/applying-for-redundancy-] says not.

My memory of my redundancy is: there is a distance where they can require you to move, and a distance above which they either provide you an alternative job or make you redundant (their choice, not yours).

Re: the alternative job, there's a set percentage of similarities in tasks that have to be in place. Working in a different department wouldn't be enough, it would have to be a totally different set of tasks you were doing. So, say you worked as an admin assistant to a particular department working on X, and 20% of your role was doing background research. If they moved you to a totally different dept and you were now doing 40% research into a totally different area, that still wouldn't be enough of a change.

As I say, I'm only basing this on what we were told, but our firm took legal advise and I had independent legal advise and that's my memory of it (I took redundancy: they were changing my role to one more senior and changing its focus which I could have applied for but because it was more senior I couldn't be made apply- because it was a different level I had the option but the reason I wanted to leave was the complete change of focus and that on its own wouldn't have been enough)

Argh this is so frustrating!
I didn't think it would be possible but thought I'd 🤞🏻
