Abortion follow up

I've got an appointment tomorrow following an abortion over 2 weeks ago. I've been asked to go in as a pregnancy test showed a positive result and I'm still bleeding.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did the follow up entail? I have to go alone and feeling quite nervous. Thanks.

Yes I have. They scanned me and it showed there was a small bit of retained product.

They gave me the option of having a pill which could help me contract and expel it, or have a anesthetic and them doing a D&C.

I chose both, I booked the operation and took the medicine. If nothing happened then I could have the D&C.

Nothing happened, the pill did absolutely nothing.

The D&C was easy, fine and simple. I have a scan tomorrow to see if it’s all clear.

This was after a MMC, but it’s the same procedure.

Good luck for tomorrow.

Following my failed d&c procedure after mmc (not that it matters but to give you a clear up front that procedure might vary). I was booked in for a scan. I also had a pelvic check (prodding abdomen, no internal). I was also suffering with a terrible uti at the same time, they were checking for retained products and any indication of an infection in my womb.

Hi, I am assuming you had a medical termination.
If so sometimes not all of the pregnancy passes and you have retained tissues hence the positive pregnancy test. They usually scan you and decide on a course of treatment after that. Sometimes they will give it a bit more time to happen naturally or they will decide that the best thing to do is take you to theatre to clear out the uterus.
Hope all works out

Yes, it was a medical. What is a D&C?

positive result could just mean your hormones havent dropped back down yet They will need to check to be sure

Good luck today.

I’m currently in the waiting room for an ultrasound because I’m in a similar position!

Dilation and curettage refers to the dilation of the cervix and surgical removal of part of the lining of the uterus and/or contents of the uterus by scraping and scooping

This is standard practice to ensure the whole pregnancy has miscarried.

Nothing to be afraid of just think of it as a checkup.

There is a significant failure rate for medical termination that should have been explained at booking. Simultaneous administration of the drug roughly doubles the failure rate. They usually give you a booklet with the exact figures in. If you are still pregnant they should discuss your options and help you decide what you want to do.

How’s it going OP?

I have to have another D&C. They tried telling me it could be another failed pregnancy but that would make it an immaculate conception! This has been going on since July.

I hope you have a better turn out than me.

Best of luck.

Thankyou all for your reassurances.

I got the all clear after a quick scan! Very relieved! Must of been those pesky hormones!
