To use two names?

Long story short I am currently sub contracted to a company which involves a lot of incidents where my name is published alongside my work.

As I was in a DV relationship with ex previously i have used a known as name such as Jane Smith to ensure he cannot find me easily through work but my tax details are still in my legal name of say Jane Jones and I can't be bothered with the stress of changing everything bank, tax credits, accounts out and paying for replacements of ID and passports.

As I was subcontracted rather than employed it was never an issue as no checks were done.

I am now in the position of changing jobs and would prefer to stay in the same situation as again the new role may involve my name being published but this time I would be employed rather than contracted.
I filled in the application as Jane Smith without even thinking so they have my known as name and my current position will give a reference in that name but presumably when I give my NI number or they send for my tax information it will be in my legal name.

How do I deal with this without having to tell potential new employers of the reasons why?

Surely they don't need a reason why. I use my maiden name for half my stuff, and my DH's for other things. I do get funny looks when I can't remember which I use where, but I honestly think other people don't care.

Thanks Redshoes that's good to know.

Ditto. The only time I ran into difficulties with using two names was when I had several accounts at one bank and they couldn't cope with me having one in maiden name and other in married name. I think it's fairly common to use maiden name for work and married name for family stuff. You don't need to explain yourself to anyone else.

I also use my maiden name for work as I built up my professional reputation before getting married.
It can sometimes be a faff but hasn’t caused any problems with payment/tax etc.

Do you have a bank account in your work name? That would help.
