To ask whether the cheaper alternatives to Fitbit work?

bridgetreilly · 16/01/2018 22:53

I can't afford a proper one, so I've been looking around at cheaper alternatives. Has anyone tried one and do they work okay, or should I just save up for a real Fitbit?

I like the look of these Misfit Shine.

I have one called a diggro from wish.com. it was about £12 and does heart rate, steps, calories, distance, time spent exercising and time/date. It also tracks your sleep via your heart rate and their is an app where you can see all your results. I thought it would be rubbish but it's actually fine for me and I can't see why I'd want to pay £100+ for a Fitbit which does essentially the same thing.

Fascinate · 16/01/2018 23:08

A BBC program about a year ago tested a variety of wrist worn heart rate monitors from £20 through to £100+ and found none of them were reliably accurate. I think it was the series that looked into diets and sorted people into grazers, bingers, etc.

bridgetreilly · 16/01/2018 23:11

I don't really want it for heart rate, just for steps.

I'll check out the diggro, thanks! Good to know there are cheaper options.

I have had a mii band 2 for over a year, its very good although I dont recommend wearing it in the shower even though it says showerproof, mine had to spend a day in a bag of rice when I forgot to take it off. They can be bought for around £25 t

Piffpaffpoff · 16/01/2018 23:19

I have a £20 number off Amazon. i just wanted at watch that told me steps. I don’t believe it’s accurate for distance but I can see if I have been more or less active each day and that’s all I wanted.

GammaDelta · 16/01/2018 23:47

I have a 11.60 pounds of mi 2 band. Works perfectly well

BelleandBeast · 16/01/2018 23:50

What about an app on your phone? Moves is quite a good one.

The first types of fitbits are very cheap on Ebay now.

bridgetreilly · 17/01/2018 10:05

Because I never know where my phone is!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, very helpful.

Very do good voucher codes and discounts on electrically - I have bought Fitbit flex on two separate occasions for £34. Fitbit app is ace and worth it. Flex is a bit ugly but got a rose gold bangle for it at Christmas and is very pretty now!

gingercat02 · 17/01/2018 10:52

I have Nuband from Argos does steps and sleep tracking. I bought my Mum the Evolve version for Christmas which counts cycling, gym work and swimming too. Mine's fine but might upgrade if it died

Badgertastic · 17/01/2018 10:58

I have the mini band too. We bought it from gear best. It is good and also lets you know when you have calls or messages. Was around £15 but if you look on hot UK deals it can fluctuate in price and be lower.

Badgertastic · 17/01/2018 10:59

Sorry mii band 2 - damn auto correct!

NannyR · 17/01/2018 11:00

I just bought a basic pedometer that you clip to your waistband or slip in your pocket. A tracker that you wear on your wrist wouldn't have worked for me as I do a lot of walking pushing a buggy.

FindoGask · 17/01/2018 11:14

If you just want something to count steps you absolutely would be fine with a cheaper one. I had a mi band 2 which worked great.

bluebells1 · 17/01/2018 11:20

I have been using a Crane from Aldi/Lidl (can't remember which one) for the last 1 year and it is brilliant. I bought it on sale at 15 pounds. Grin I used the steps app on my phone and it gave me the same results.

I have a Mi band 2 and it's great.

foxyloxy78 · 17/01/2018 20:02

Fitbits are absolute shit, so yes I would see what else you can get. Been through two Fitbits so far. Never again.

blackteasplease · 17/01/2018 20:04

I've got a cheap more fit one from Amazon and it's great for what I want - steps and sleep.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2018 20:04

If you just want a step counter, pedometers are really cheap. Don't get a cheap fitness tracker, because they are rubbish (especially the Chinese knockoffs).
