Do not waste your money on Scottish Power Boiler Care!

I have learnt the hard way that my Boiler Care agreement was not worth anything and I have wasted hundreds and hundreds of pounds paying almost £20 per month for the past few years. There is no AIBU here, just a warning to check the terms and conditions of this kind of thing very very carefully.

I had Boiler Care Plus which was sold to me as ‘complete peace of mind’ because it covered my whole heating system. It turns out that it doesn’t cover the pipe work that joins the system together, nor any of the most basic things that go wrong with boilers (like blockages or leaks), nor does it cover a full annual service - they just do a visual inspection each year.

I have had horrendous problems with them this winter and reported them to the ombudsman. Turns out these Boiler Care packages are unregulated products and Scottish Power can get away with doing what they like as a result. There is no way of holding them to account!

Please don’t make the same mistake I have. I am ashamed of my naivety in the whole sorry episode!

That’s awful. Mine is with British Gas who I am sure aren’t the cheapest but they are really transparent about what’s offered on each level of cover. I had to call them out not long before Christmas and they fixed my boiler and replaced a leaky radiator, great job. They also do an annual service.

I can second this. I have an elderly family member who purchased this because they have a relatively rare boiler and they wanted to ensure it was serviced every year. After 2 years of no servicing I helped them to call Scottish Power who told me they don't promise to service boilers annually despite advertising this in their literature. They said if I referred to page blah section 5 in the terms and conditions the wording is that they will "endeavour " to service annually.

I was really unhappy with this and complained both over the phone and via email. Despite chasing numerous times 8 never got a response.

I would NEVER recommend this shockingly shite company to anyone

Have to say, I started off with British Gas and only because my power supply was through Scottish Power and they offered a good deal did I swap to their boiler programme. BIG MISTAKE.

They were awful. They cancelled coming around twice. Their engineer lied and said I was not in when I had been in ALL DAY waiting for him.

I cancelled my new agreement with them and got my money reimbursed.

I am happily back with British Gas now.

British Gas are so much better. Our heating stopped on Saturday night, they came out on the Sunday and it was a pump that had failed. He had the part in his van, so after a bit of banging about in the loft full heating was restored. This was all free of charge and we got a free annual service as part of the care. We asked the engineer how much it would cost if we weren’t covered. He said his time on a Sunday was £60 per hour plus VAT, the part was £150 plus vat and he was there for 2 hours.

Scottish Power are bad news full stop. They have the most appalling customer service and were recently fined millions for their poor standards. Lots of stuff on Facebook about this. Leave them as soon as you can. If you want any actual help you have to contact the CEO or go to the ombudsman.
