Odd date story

Not my story but just a bit 🙄 as is the friend it happened to. Friend arranged first date with a guy she met online. mid date he mentions his parents are awAy for the weekend. Friend thinks ‘oh okay are you thinking you can take me back to there’s?’ He’s currently living with them and it was an afternoon coffee date and she had already told him she wanted to go slow.

He then goes on to say they are away staying in the venue of his wedding as he was meant to be getting married that day, but they split up, after everything was booked and paid for.

AIBU to think it’s an odd time to chose a date for and if you did you wouldn’t mention it, it was then all he spoke about.

Hmm No one comes out well in this story. Your poor friend. That must have been really awkward. What did she say? So sad for the date who must have been in a bad way. And how weird of the parents to be using the hotel. Not very supporive of their jilted son. If this the way they behave no wonder he did not think it odd to go on a date that day.

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 15/01/2018 23:29

He said his parents didn’t want to waste their money.

Who said he was jilted?
Context is everything.
Say if the split was 6 months ago, and he's over it, then told right it's a funny story.
If he's not over it and using a first date as therapy - ugh!

okeydokeygirl · 15/01/2018 23:47

Ellisandra. You make a good point. Although I am guessing g by the poster's friends reaction it did not come across as funny. It is the kind of scenario tha might be portrayed in a dark comedy with Stephen Mangan.

Ellisandra · 15/01/2018 23:52

Just re-read - I missed the last line that it was then all he spoke about Shock

It's good though... it's good to have ice breakers when you've got an OLD first date. I used to say "so come on then - worst first coffee so far?" and that usually got the quiet ones talking. Now OP's friend has a great first date story Grin

MelloDee · 16/01/2018 00:03

Who split with who?

If he split with the ex after letting his parents pay for their wedding, he's a dick and I'd leave

If the ex split with him and he's still upset and not over it, I'd also leave. Wouldn't want to be a rebound 2nd best 'trying to get over the ex' thing.

Weird date

Ellisandra · 16/01/2018 00:18

So if he realised the ex wasn't for him, he should have gone ahead with a marriage to a woman he didn't want to be with, putting unwittingly into a marriage with a man who didn't want it - just because his parents already paid?!!! Shock that's batshit!

KC225 · 16/01/2018 02:54

How odd. Odd thing to arrange a first date for that particular day, even odder to mention it to the date. But agree with the poster upthread who said tell her to chalk it up as a good dating story.

My friend has a cracker, a guy saying to her he was about to to into a witness protection program due to an FBI investigation, so to bear that in mind if she didn't see him again. They met in Brighton.

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 16/01/2018 13:00

And now he’s asked for a second date!!

helpmum2003 · 16/01/2018 13:02

He certainly has a lot of issues to work through! Is she up for that?

letsdolunch321 · 16/01/2018 13:05

Your friend needs to run and keep running Shock

cantucciniamaretto · 16/01/2018 13:26

Why be mean about the parents for no reason?

okeydokeygirl · 16/01/2018 13:43

I just think it is a bit odd. Son was going to get married. Now not happening. He lives with them and they go away on his planned wedding day to the place that he was going to get married. I just think I might have been a bit upset at that. Of course it depends on the circumstances as to why the wedding was cancelled. Can you imagine if the other guests still went too? Not saying that happened but it would be upsetting if friends and family still went away to stay at the hotel leaving the no longer groom at home.

okeydokeygirl · 16/01/2018 13:45

I am of course letting my imagination run away with me with this story and currently casting it in my head.

cantucciniamaretto · 16/01/2018 13:48

He might be a fucking nightmare to have back at home and they are using any reason to get away from him, for all you know.

mummmy2017 · 16/01/2018 13:50

Maybe he wanted it out in the open, in case he liked her a lot, and then he wouldnt have to get his parents to lie..
We don't live in a soap opera, some guys tell it like it is.
