Too embarrassed by mattress to throw it out!

We've only had our mattress for a bout three years but we really need to replace it. We can either take to the tip of pay the council to collect it. I don't really mind which way but my dilemma is I am so ashamed of it I daren't throw it out! For the past three years I've been having extremely heavy periods and often while I sleep it's leaked onto the mattress. I'm fairly certain that any methods to remove blood stains won't remove them entirely but if anyone knows how I can get rid of these or somehow cover them up I would be very grateful. Sorry if this has grossed anyone out.

I had similar issues before I put a waterproof protector on ours. When we got rid of it I stapled two sheets onto it.

Pay the council to collect and only put it out the night before in the dark? It'll be gone by lunchtime at the latest.

If you're throwing it out why don't you cover them up? You could splash black India ink all over them?

Buy a couple of cheap mattress covers and wrap mattress in them.

Buy a waterproof cover for your new one

Cut out the stain?

Get a cheap mattress protector - the kind that zip around the whole thing. Not the plastic sheet kind.
About £15 I reckon.
It'll look brand new, my only worry would be someone pinching it thinking it is brand new

I know what you mean, my last mattress looked like a murder scene! We took it to the dump ourselves and flung it in top down.

We had to get rid of one that had taken the brunt of post-partum bleeding, night sweats, baby (and toddler) vomit and all sorts. Put it into a king-size duvet cover, stitch the end shut in a few places, then either take it to the tip or call the Council to collect. I guarantee you they'll have seen worse!

Yes hurl something that will stain it badly all over it. Ink is a good idea or try a bottle of bleach. Then take to tip yourself as nobody else will handle it or even notice it. Invest in a mattress topper for the new mattress.

I had the same! DH ripped off all the material and put it in the trash, then we got the scrap man to take away the springy bit.

They'll have seen worse though.

Just stick it out. The notion of covering it up in perfectly usable bedding etc is so wasteful and harmful to the environment.

On another note, it’s high time tampon ads etc used red liquid rather than blue. We all fucking bleed.

When I got my new mattress the company offered an uplift service for £20

They sent me a massive big mattress size bag which I had to wrap it in. That might be an option when you're buying a new one

Put a cheap fitted sheet on it when you put it out.

I moved quite recently and had to downsize, and yes, I bought a zipped mattress cover for my now redundant mattress before I put it in my skip. The thought of new neighbours seeing it before the skip was collected was just too much.

We dismantled our mattresses - there are YouTube videos to show you best methods - though the better quality the longer it takes to take apart. You can then put stained fabric in bin, ok fabric and wadding in fabric recycling and scrap-merchant or tip for the metal springs.

I just roll them up, duct tape then a black bag taped round the middle/over each end. Simple. Then take it to the tip.

You could chuck paint on it. Or get a strong black bag, a chunky pair of scissors and cut all the fabric and padding out. You could probably recycle the metal springs that way.

I’d ask dh to load into the van at night and take to the tip so no one saw it near our house/me, he wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

Take it to the dump. No one will be paying any attention.

Put straight bleach in a spray bottle and spray over the stains. Leave it to dry and the blood stains will disappear.
