Book recommendations for EAL children

Has anyone any suggestions for picture books suitable for youngish children (5-6 years old) with EAL? These children understand English OK ish, but need fairly simple but interesting stories. A lot of my own childhood favourites made reference to very English things such as the English countryside, nursery rhymes, or only portray people who are all white. Are there children's books out there that show things that a recent immigrant child living in an inner city might be more familiar with, or that just have pictures showing different types of people?

Have been doing animal/dinosaur stories, but they keep commenting that animals can't talk, so I feel that something about people might be appreciated! Also some of the Julia Donaldson stories which I think are lovely seem quite difficult for them to grasp - although they love the rhymes and pictures. So it would need to be simple and fairly short.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Eric Carle books like the Hungry Caterpillar are ideal, plenty of repetition and familiar themes. From Head to Toes is another great one.

Try letterbox library for inclusive and multicultural books. Many are U.S. Imports so watch out for odd spellings. Mantra books have good multicultural resources too, every school should have their Welcome posters!

Thanks - I'll have a look at those!
