The biggest spider I’ve ever seen in this country (UK) just ran out from under my bed. I thought they would all be dead by now with the cold weather! This one was so big and fast that when I saw the movement out of the corner of my eye I thought it was a mouse or something.
I know it’s not going to hurt me and it’s probably equally terrified and has gone to find another hiding place, but my god I feel physically sick with fear. Wish I wasn’t such a wuss

YABU. Just purchase an ordinary flamethrower and thoroughly char everything in your bedroom. It's overkill to destroy the rest of the house.

@annie haha! I think it’s ran into one of the other bedrooms so i’ll Have to destroy the top floor of my house at least! My cat has been no help at all with dealing with it either

Did you see where it went? I throw blankets/towels over big spiders. It doesn't hurt them. I get dh or friendly neighbour to deal with it - whichever can get there first!

Failing that - burn the fucker down!

@nancy my OH will hopefully deal with it later as he loves spiders (the freak!)
He’s out until about half 6 though. Hopefully I can work out where it is and put a massive box over it. It’s definitely the worst phobia to have because at least with things like flying or heights you can avoid those scenarios. But with spiders you never know when one is going to appear 😱

Grab a can of petroleum, walk through the house methodically in every room leaving a liquidy trail in your wake, then throw matches around. Then run.

I just don’t understand how anyone couldn’t be scared of them?! When my OH sees a big one unexpectedly he’s like “oh how cute” and then just leaves it in the house. There was a big wolf spider in our shed and he tickled its belly and made it run all over the wall. I might have to leave him come to think of it. He’s clearly a sadist!

Although I think spiders’ bellies are quite delicate so you shouldn’t do that as might kill them.

Yeah he tickled it on purpose to get it to move as he was trying to wind me up (he knows I hate the way they move fast). I’ll never step foot in that shed again as long as I live!

That would be arson which is a crime and the spiders in jails are a hell of a lot bigger than domestic ones!

You want to get yourself some of those spindly not-running-about-ones that just sit in a web in a corner (people always know the name of them, but I keep forgetting it). They get rid of the big spiders!!! Best thing I learned on MN last year.

I keep a couple of out-of-sight webby corners deliberately now!

I have a otherwise utterly useless cat who is surprisingly good* at dealing with spiders. £100 an hour?

*Depending where it is. If at height, you may need to lift her up to reach the spider, which is terrifying.

Yeah I'd 'tickle' dh's belly with a fucking blow torch if he pulled that shit on me.

When we were first going out he 'teased' me with a spider.

After the initial 10000000 decibel shrieking and 174mpg running I came back and tore in to him for 20 minutes.

He is under no illusion that what he did made him lower than all of the scum in the earth and if he ever does it again I'll break his legs and then divorce him. And possibly burn his family's houses down.

@bummy haha I think my OH is learning that I will drop down dead if he winds me up about spiders again. I had an ex when I was much younger who once caught a huge daddy long legs in his hands and then put it on my head. I have never screamed so much in my life

I told dh it was abusive. That it made him a small human. That he must have a character flaw that made him want to scare women. That I questioned my relationship with him. That him made him less attractive.

I went on for ages. I knew it was my only chance to nip that kind of thing in the bud.

This is one of the reasons I love my cat. He will eat spiders, catch flies and mice.

Unfortunately he is usually the reason there would be a mouse in the house - but he is considerate enough to leave the half chewed bleeding ones on my wooden floor, never left them on the cream carpet or took anything upstairs.

I can't stand spiders, usually get DH with the hoover. Although once, there was one too big for even him. So we had to get my Auntie over, who took it home in a glass to show my uncle haha!!

When DS was a baby, less than 1. DH was putting his coat on and a HUGE spider ran off the coat and up towards DH face. Eventually managed to kill it, had to rush out after as we were staying at in-laws. Came back the next day and it had gone!! We didn't have the cat then, so I have no idea what happened to it!

I had a humongous thing run past me on the sofa. I managed to squash it with the iPad. 😩😩 I would have burnt the sofa but it’s too comfy. I just hoped to god no impregnated female had laid their eggs in it as it was mating season. I can safely say I’ve seen no offspring.
