To ask about Limerick?

We might be moving there from Australia and I honestly don't know the first thing about the place. Which areas would you move to if you had three kids (lower high school and upper primary), are not afraid of driving, etc....?

I have lived overseas before - The Netherlands, and I loved it. I imagine that Ireland would be a slightly easier transition because there is (almost) no language difference and the sense of humour is similar.

I honestly don't know who to ask!

I'm an Aussie who lived in Limerick for a bit. I can't offer any advise on schools etc but have you visited there?

I love Ireland (dh is Irish) but you couldn't pay me enough to move back there.

Its nickname in Ireland is Stab City.

I agree. Half my family is Irish and we lived there for a few years.

Ireland is great to visit but you also couldnt pay me to live there again. After the Netherlands, you will probably be disappointed.

I found it parochial and insular despite being a generally friendly place. I didnt find it very forward thinking or open to change and new influences, even in the cities, which is something you do get in the Netherlands.

On a practical level, it pissed me off to have to get a plane everytime I wanted to get out (obviously not Irelands fault!). There was something about that psychologically that depressed me. At least in England you can hop on the Eurostar and be in Belgium or France in 1.5 hours.

In short, I found it beautiful and the people as a general rule friendly for sure, but felt stifled by how inward looking and samey everything felt after awhile.

It's not that bad. There are estates and places where there are travellers which are a bit dodgy but most of it is nice. Dooradoyle is nice residential area.

Bear in mind that being called 'stab city' in Ireland does not make it downtown Chicago. It means there were a few incidents in the 90s.

Its nickname used to be Stab City due to the high incidence of knife crime but they've really tackled that in recent years so I wouldn't let that worry you.

OP ask to have your thread moved to the Craicnet section you'll probably get more current intel on life in Limerick.

I'm from Cork which is quite close to Limerick, Limerick does have a reputation as being pretty rough but it has gotten alot better over the years. Wouldn't know it well enough to give you specific areas that are nice and ones that are not though

No, I lived in Cork and Dublin and frequently out to Wexford to see family.

Actually I really like Galway city.

Haha, good old stab city. To be honest, you're more likely to be bored to death than bleed to death! But insular, although folk are friendly and there's a lot to be said for the slow paced culchie life.

I know that when you imagine the Netherlands you are thinking Amsterdam or Hague, but we were in a small town close to the German border that had not recovered from WW2 and was not coping with immigrants. I would not say "Foreward thinking" was really their forte. I made some amazing friends, but I was glad to be back. (Especially after being repeatedly told "I guess you're not as foreign as other foreigners because you're blonde....", etc. That made me very uncomfortable.)

I bet OP is rugby player/partner of rugby player making a move to Munster 😉

It’s really doesn’t deserve the ‘Stab city’ name anymore, great work has been done to stamp out the problems caused by feuding families.

I’m skitting here at the thought of having to be streetwise to live in Limerick 😆

DH is from Limerick and we have visited many times. The first time i unlocked the boot of my car and stupidly left the key in the lock. Someone found it and handed it in to the restaurant where we were. Never seen any problems there at all.

If you go to this forum www.munsterfans.com/forums/17-Blabla you can ask questions of the Munster supporters club who are really helpful. They are great with information on the city for people visiting.

Uurgh, I'm so sick of the "Stab City" moniker still following us around. There was a problem but we've come a long way since the 80s and 90s.

Castletroy, Monaleen and the surrounding areas are nice. They are close to the University so you'd have to be careful not to end in a student estate but the people are lovely.

Dooradoyle is nice too as are parts of Corbally and in around the Ennis Road area - Clareview, Caherdavin etc.

I think most Irish people don't think of Limerick like that anymore. The Rubberbandits are the first thing that springs to my mind when I hear Limerick these days
