To assume the best rather than the worst?

After the birth of DD, now 13, I had severe PND and Heath anxiety. It's taken a long time to reach the point of not assuming every symptom is sinister, but now I would say I am very able to assume things are ok or innocent and to wait and see if they get better. I've had fibroids diagnosed and various other issues in that time.

But this week, after suffering with a sore neck muscle, I accidentally found a lump. It is near my collar bone, a fairly good size but very mobile. I thought it was probably linked to the swollen muscle and I should just wait and see if it goes down or away. I made a GP appointment anyway, for 2 weeks time, in case it's the same. Then I found a much smaller lump or bump behind my ear. Still calm.

But I told my best friend, and she says collar bone lumps are really bad and I must get to the GP straight away. I refuse to google symptoms (learned to stop that to help with the heath anxiety!). I don't want to get anxious and hysterical, but I also don't want to be the one who could have been saved if they'd gone to their GP earlier. Not sure I could get an earlier appointment anyway. BF doesn't have any medical background but knows a friend of a friend....

AIBU to stick with my first plan - not worry and go in 2 weeks if it hasn't changed. Or should I worry and try to go straight away?

Could you do a middle ground of talking to your practice nurse on the phone?

I googled it for you :) and the advice is to go in after 2 weeks if it hasn't cleared up.

Thanks. I'll keep waiting. But now she's got me more worried about it than I'd like to be..... friend of a friend had similar and it was lymphoma. Trying very hard to block that and think positively!

What a silly thing for your friend to say! There are lots of far more likely causes (swollen nymph lodes, small cyst, even a bad spot under the skin!) that are easy to treat. Advice online seems to be to wait a couple of weeks and then see your doctor so it sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing x

LyraPotter · 10/01/2018 13:02

That should be lymph not nymph!

earlylifecrisis · 10/01/2018 13:04

You have the right approach imo. Whilst it is always good to check out lumps and bumps there are many benign causes. I got in a massive tizz about a thyroid lump that was a cyst in the end - I ruined several months of my life googling then being unable to eat or sleep over it so your approach is better.

At my surgery, I can ring and ask whether they think I need to be seen sooner. You could do that.

Diplomum · 10/01/2018 17:53

Thanks all. My surgery doesn't seem to want to put you through to a doctor, so I'll just wait. Hopefully it's nothing.
