Follow-up email after job interview

Hi everyone,

I had a job interview last Friday evening and haven't heard anything yet about the outcome, so I was just wondering if I should send a quick email to ask?

I was thinking of writing an email along the lines of:

Dear X,

Thank you very much for inviting me to interview last Friday. It was a pleasure to meet you and X.

Following the interview, I'd just like to ask whether any decision may have been made yet about my application?

Best wishes,

WellAlwaysHaveParis.

I think it's fine to email, but if interview was only Friday I would say it's a little soon.

I have interviewed lots of times and sometimes we see candidates over the period of a couple of weeks (sometimes we do them all in one day and then the decision is much quicker - but we had to wait for HR to get round to calling).

Callamia · 09/01/2018 12:02

It’s only Tuesday!
No. They’ll tell you when they’ve made a decision. You might be second choice, and they might be waiting on first choice to make their decision.

Raver84 · 09/01/2018 12:08

Dont. I'd say wait a week before you did that. From experience I always ask in the interview the time to hear back and what the overall interview process is. most are happy to say you will hear by Friday or whatever.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 09/01/2018 12:12

It's only been one working day in the second week of the new year! Give them a chance!

MyKingdomForBrie · 09/01/2018 12:18

It’s unlikely they’ve made their minds up but forgotten to tell you - i’d give it at least another week before chasing, it really hasn’t been long.

Was there any discussion at the end of the interview about when they would let you know the outcome? When I interview at work, this is always something we say at the end of interview - 'Thanks for coming in. We're seeing another X people this week, and hope to make a decision by Y', and if I am going for an interview then it is something I always ask if the information is not volunteered.

I think Tuesday morning is probably a bit quick if you don't know that they have completed interviewing. If it's any consolation, we always phone the recruitment agent about definite 'no, thanks' candidates immediately.

dreamingofprairies · 09/01/2018 12:26

They might be still interviewing other candidates before making a decision. I would wait a week before sending an email.

DerelictWreck · 09/01/2018 12:34

Gosh no, I'd wait until at least next week before chasing! FYI, I did rounds of interviews last week and almost all asked about the process/when they'd hear back at the end of the interview. It's a good and normal question to have up your sleeve!

LittlestTruck · 09/01/2018 12:34

Far too soon op I'd give it until fri at least good luck

Henrysmycat · 09/01/2018 12:48

As someone who interviewed people and was responsible for recruitment of graduates for FTSE100 company, I find the applicants that followed up got extra brownie points for determination and wanting the job.
Proactiveness especially if you’re going for a sales job or any job that needs self-starters is a major point. You have nothing to lose to send a polite email.
I’d add a bit more why you want the job too.
If anything, emailing straight after the interview to thank them for the time always work. They keep you in mind.
Do it.

SnowFairyDust · 09/01/2018 12:51

Nice email, but too soon, I'd send it on Friday if no news.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 09/01/2018 12:51

I'd leave it until Thursday/Friday but I think your email wording is great.

Good luck!

DontCallMeJohnBoy · 09/01/2018 12:58

Leave it for now, they're likley still waiting on references for their preferred candidate.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 09/01/2018 14:05

Thanks everyone.

I had the interview on Friday evening, so they really haven't had very much time at all to make a decision.

They said at the interview that they were meeting with colleagues on Monday morning (yesterday) to draw up a contract for this role, so they said they expected to have a decision by then.

I'm unsure about sending the email, as I want to show them I'm proactive but don't want to be seen as pushy.

hellsbellsmelons · 09/01/2018 14:09

Send one tomorrow.
That's given them time for the meeting on Monday and time to draw up contracts yesterday.
So should really know by tomorrow.
Nothing to lose!

Aliasgrace1 · 09/01/2018 14:15

Email them! Shows you're keen if nothing else Smile good luck!

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 09/01/2018 14:59

Just emailed them :) thanks again everyone.

Didn't get the job :( they just sent an email this morning. I've asked for feedback though, so hopefully I'll learn something from it :)

Well done OP. It's tough I know Flowers, but that's the right approach. Yours will come soon I'm sure.

hellsbellsmelons · 10/01/2018 16:17

Ahhh. Sorry OP.
That's shite.
I hope they give you something to work with.
But it could just be someone else fit the bill a little bit better.
Onwards and upwards.

afrikat · 10/01/2018 16:23

I interviewed candidates last Wednesday and Thursday. I only got hold of my HR person yesterday to discuss with her my preferred candidate and she needed to gather some more paperwork before offering her the position. This is pretty normal where I work (big company).
If you really want to email i would just thank them for the interview but don't push for an answer. I'd find it irritating personally and it's not going to make things move any faster

afrikat · 10/01/2018 16:24

Oh I'm sorry I didn't see your update. Really sorry you didn't get it. Hope the feedback is useful

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 10/01/2018 20:45

Thanks everyone Flowers
