By putting it in a saucepan with a little oil, lid on and let the magic happen ......

Is the final result - popcorn - classed as a vegetable?

I would not count it as one of your five a day. Probably would count it as one of ten a day.

AdaColeman · 07/01/2018 17:34

If you add celery salt or cayenne pepper to it, then does it become one of your five a day?

ATeardropExplodes · 07/01/2018 17:46

Any edible plant or part of a plant is considered a vegetable.

NE14T · 07/01/2018 17:58

Not for the purposes of government run 5/7/ a day though teardrop

I wouldn't class it as a veg, sorry! Wine as fruit on the other hand...

MycatsaPirate · 07/01/2018 18:01

Probably not but fuck it, I'd count it. Unless you cover it in syrup or sugar. In which case it may be one of those 100 cal snack things.

Figrollsnotfatrolls · 07/01/2018 18:02

Stick some green food colouring in. Must be a veg then?

Basecamp21 · 07/01/2018 18:03

Cover it with chocolate and then it counts as 2..

MrsPestilence · 07/01/2018 18:35

Only if your chocolate has 70% cocoa solids Basecamp

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 07/01/2018 18:38

It's a grain. Still healthy though.

c75kp0r · 07/01/2018 18:39

Swwetcorn is a vegetable but relatively high in starchy carbs /sugar and is used to make corn starch

LittleBirdBlues · 07/01/2018 18:42

SIL is Colombian and told me that they mix popcorn with crisps. That's two of your five a day! Grin

LittleBirdBlues · 07/01/2018 18:43

Also, sure you use butter as well as oil? Butter is essential in popcorn!

KurriKurri · 07/01/2018 19:06

Make it in the microwave and you won;t have the added oil/butter. (Not the prepacked mcrowave stuff - buy a bag of crom kernels and put them in a glass bowl wiith a lid and zap til they pop.)

Vitalogy · 07/01/2018 19:08

Butter, oil, salt, yum and fun.

squishysquirmy · 07/01/2018 19:09

Sweetcorn/corn on the cob counts as one of your 5 a day doesn't it?
Same thing! Do Doritos count too? Grin

HerrenaHarridan · 07/01/2018 19:26

I pop mine with a bit of coconut oil.

Healthy(ish) Toppings I can recommend
-nutritional yeast (cheesy flavour)

  • agave nectar ( turn heat off, drizzle a little in, close pan and shoogle, pour into bowl WASH PAN IMMEDIATELY)
  • garlic powder
  • any kind of flavoured salt
