To ask you to help me choose a sofa?

Okay, not really aibu but Dh and I disagree so other thoughts may be helpful (or confuse me further).

We moved house a couple of months ago and have a larger living room. Currently we have a large chair (cuddle chair type thing) and 3 seater sofa with cream fabric covers. They're really comfy despite being 13 years old so we don't want to replace them. Matching them would never be exact enough so we've decided to add a small sofa that's a completely different style to compliment the look.

One option is a very comfy rich brown leather electric reclining sofa (I've never liked leather but was very surprised when I sat on it to find it very comfortable. We have 3 small dc so easy-to-clean is inviting)

Other option is a very soft teal chesterfield which I've had my heart set on since seeing it.

They are similar prices and measurements.

My heart says chesterfield but dh pointed out it'll be covered in stickiness within a few months so maybe that's something we buy when we're old / dc have left home. I know he's right. He likes the electric recliner because he can play with buttons and all our family in the States have leather sofas.

My head says leather one is much more sensible and is still nice, just not what I'd pictured.

My head probably should win here shouldn't it?

I hate leather (had one when DDs were smaller and it just got scuffed and filthy every 2 minutes. I personally find fabric easier to steam clean) Also you stick to leather during summer and its freezing in winter. Love big squashy comfy fabric ones. the chesterfield wins for me :)

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 02/01/2018 01:45

Get the fabric one, get scotch guard and implement a no eating on the sofa rule

WatchTheFoxes · 02/01/2018 05:19

Leather is so easy to wipe clean I would get that with young children. How about a teal leather? Recliners can be dangerous though if you have pets or babies as they can get caught in the mechanism.

PointlessUsername · 02/01/2018 05:22

The teal one

glow1984 · 02/01/2018 05:35

I would also go with the chesterfield, I’m not a big fan of leather sofas!

Creambun2 · 02/01/2018 06:03

Leather sofas are vulgar.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 02/01/2018 06:07

Another vote for the teal Chesterfield

flumpybear · 02/01/2018 06:44

Chesterfield! We have two sofas one is older, white with washable covers, the other is blue, new and expensive
The kids know the rules - no sitting on the blue sofa - it works for us, had it 18 months ..... tho husband did spill beer on it .... he was lucky I didn’t brain him!

Motoko · 02/01/2018 09:11

A Chesterfield is a classic design, whereas those leather recliner sofas look really tacky IMO. The style will date quickly, and with the reclining mechanism, there's more to go wrong with the sofa.

I'd choose the Chesterfield. As a pp said, you could ban the children from sitting or eating on it, or chuck a throw over it during the day while they're up.

Went for chesterfield but not teal. I had samples arrive and fell for the navy blue one.

The teal chesterfield definitely! Not a fan of leather ones.

Whichschool2020 · 06/01/2018 23:40

Xpost. Love it!

MotherCupboard · 06/01/2018 23:42

Really nice! Great choice op.

Motoko · 07/01/2018 00:45

Nice! As I said, a Chesterfield is a classic design, so it'll never go out of style.

badbadhusky · 07/01/2018 00:47

We had antique Chesterfields when I was growing up, always so uncomfortable, but your modern one looks better.

Cantspell2 · 07/01/2018 00:54

I have had leather sofas for years as they were great when the children were young. They are grown now and I am in the process of decorating again so have decided it is Me time and have gone for a purple velvet sofa and 2 armchairs in a contemporary style with brass castors instead of feet.

callmeadoctor · 07/01/2018 00:58

Leather sounds wonderful (and is!) but is bloody freezing so we have throws all over ours (which sort of defeats having leather!!!)

m0therofdragons · 07/01/2018 22:21

I tried it in Debenhams and it's comfy. It's more of an occasional chair as our old sofa is ridiculously comfy and positioned for the TV. 😍
