To ask how long before cycles normalise on the minipill?

I've had very heavy painful periods since having my children. I did when younger too but took combined pill for years so that helped a lot.
Recently visted the doctor for contraception and she said I'm now too old for combined pill but mini pill generally makes periods much lighter and can stop them completely. Brilliant!!

I started the minipill. First period on it was a week of light bleeding, which I thought was a huge improvement. Except that then it turned into a further week of heavy bleeding like my normal period. So 2 weeks total.
I've started bleeding again this morning and I actually cried. It's only 13 flipping days since I stopped bleeding.

How long should I give it before giving this up as a bad job? I so wanted this to be the answer Sad

Give it at least 3 months.
Mine stopped straight away and didn’t return until 4 months after I stopped taking it but you may need to just be patient.

Karigan1 · 31/12/2017 13:33

Mine never did and they let me have the combined again.

Agree try for three months or so. I was on it for about 2 years and the first few months had several periods very close together, then they got further apart over the next 6-12 months (often one every other month or every third month) and then stopped completely. I loved it! Then I came off it to TTC and after having DS despite going back on the exact same one, I had ridiculously heavy bleeding/flooding for 3 weeks straight which I couldn't hack as a new mum, so I stopped. I'm thinking of trying it again soon.

WhyamIBoredathome · 31/12/2017 13:52

I'd be delighted if they stopped completely.
My normal cycles were only 23- 24 days with a 7-8 day heavy period. Usually two days of that with dreadful cramps and dodgy tummy.
I guess I'll give it a bit longer and keep fingers crossed that it works.

OP I'm exactly the same, I started it a month ago, post pregnancy and not allowed back ok combi pill because of BP issues as a result of pregnancy. Since I've started it I have had 2 weeks of normally bleeding, a week of nothing last week then day before yesterday I've started heavy bleeding. Absolutely infuriating, I got on so we'll will my old pill.

I was considering coming off last night but may stick at it a bit longer

I bled a lot on the mini pill - not always heavily but more days than not I'd have some kind of bleeding, often requiring a pad. I was on it for about a year then stopped as couldn't cope with it anymore. I went onto the injection next and that was fab - no periods at all. I'm now on the implant after having a baby and have not bled at all (although am also breastfeeding which can delay periods returning so not sure whether it's the implant or that or both!). I'd give it a bit longer and then explore other options.

My first time on it was weird for about three months with light bleeding on random days. Then I didn’t have a period for nearly three years. Wonderful.

When I went back on it Post DS I had no bleed whatsoever from day one of taking it until I came off it to get pregnant with DC2.

WhyamIBoredathome · 17/01/2018 23:02

So I have bled every day since writing this post 18 days ago. I have had enough now. Some days are medium flow, some are fairly light but still requiring a pad. I'm tempted to just stop taking it, it's getting ridiculous.

I've had exactly the same problems with it OP. I'm constantly bleeding, although it's not painful anymore, but I'm fed up of constantly leaking and having to use tampons and pads for weeks at a time. I'll have a day or two where it almost dries up/ tapers off, and then it's back. It really gets me down. I'm not going to take it anymore and will have to use an alternative method.

Cerezette post DD, no periods from first week (started it on day 1 of cycle) until a couple of weeks after I came off it to ttc DS. Now on day 4 but no cycle since pregnancy anyway. Love it for that but not so happy about remembering it with 2 dc, so waiting for mirena appointment (same hormone, but fit & forget)

Foslady · 18/01/2018 09:29

Had Merina fitted end of Dec with no effect (heavy peri constant bleeding). Day 3 of mini pill and have lightened but not stopped.

Hope to god this gets betterSad
