Free samples as a gift

Please settle an argument that's been rumbling since Christmas Day.

My husband acquired some free miniature samples from Clarins. He gift wrapped them and gave them to me for Christmas. He thinks I am being unreasonable because I didn't appreciate that he'd gone to the effort of wrapping them. I think he's being unreasonable for wrapping them in the first place.

I'm with you! He should have just handed them over to you.

19lottie82 · 30/12/2017 23:11

Yeah that’s pretty tight! Why didn’t he just give them to you normally, as in not a Christmas present?
Unless you are totally skint and can’t afford any other presents?

It is a gift, if he gave it along the full size Clarins stuff!

On its own...not so much

UrsulaPandress · 30/12/2017 23:12

Fucking cheapskate.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 30/12/2017 23:12

I would have loved some Clarins samples! I got absolutely nothing except a calendar that I bought and wrapped myself. He probably should have just given them to you rather than wrapping them but it's the thought that counts I guess

ijustwannadance · 30/12/2017 23:14

If he gave you a load of clarins stuff that he bought and the freebies where a bonus with them, it wouldn't bother me.

If it was just a few free samples on there own and I got nothing else, it would piss me off.

Grilledaubergines · 30/12/2017 23:14

Was it in addition to full size products? If I buy Clinique or Clarins at bonus time I would wrap the freebies up and give with the other two products. Was is something like that?

ijustwannadance · 30/12/2017 23:14

*on their own

Idontevencareanymore · 30/12/2017 23:14

If it came alone just as the free items it's a bit cheeky. As part of a item he'd paid for and gifted to you then it's nice.

SleepIsForTheWeek · 30/12/2017 23:14

YANBU. I got a book once from NotSoDSis for Christmas - it was a freebie that came when she bought a magazine.

Itscurtainsforyou · 30/12/2017 23:15

Hmm - I gave my niece some makeup for Christmas and included some free samples I'd got previously. Was that bad?

WildRosesGrow · 30/12/2017 23:17

If they were in your stocking alongside some other gifts, then I think it is OK.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 30/12/2017 23:19

Yabu, poor DH, a gift is a gift free or not and Christmas gifts are usually wrapped.

edwinbear · 30/12/2017 23:20

DH would stick those in my stocking. As it was, he stuck some Molten Brown shower gel samples obtained with my full sized one in DD6's stocking. She was pretty thrilled Grin. I actually love the samples they are great for trips away and it wouldn't bother me if they were wrapped up.

boingbat · 30/12/2017 23:40

No full size products I'm afraid, he gave those to someone else!

"Yabu, poor DH, a gift is a gift free or not and Christmas gifts are usually wrapped."

True and I guess he did put some effort in by wrapping them.

My other present was a mug (a very nice one so no complaints there)

OP posts:
ijustwannadance · 30/12/2017 23:55

Is that all he gave you for xmas?
Some free samples and a mug?
But he bought full size clarins for someone else?

If that's the case you have every right to be pissed off.

edwinbear · 30/12/2017 23:57

If he'd given the full sized Clarins to someone else and fobbed you off with the free samples, then expected gratitude I'd have been pretty pissed off, yes. YANBU.

justilou1 · 30/12/2017 23:58

I'd be shitty because it would feel like the person who got the full size products was more valuable to husband than me.

TheSnowballFairy · 31/12/2017 00:00

Was going to say DH did a treasure hunt for me with free Clarins samples a few years ago which was great.

However, he did give me the full size products as well - otherwise I would not have been impressed!

So op - YANBU at all!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 31/12/2017 00:13

Eh! Who got the full size products then?

JustHereForThePooStories · 31/12/2017 00:15

A tenner says his mother got the full sized Clarins goodies.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 31/12/2017 00:16

No I am with you all the way. Please tell me this wasn't your only gift

watchedfrozentoomanytimes · 31/12/2017 00:18

He’s unreasonable!

My ‘close’ friend gave me mini hotel toiletries for Christmas. All individually wrapped in tissue. Very odd.
