To not know what a Bigot is.

Now, I have a rough idea:

A bigot is for example: racist, homophobic..

But - is this a fluid concept according to the thinking of the day?

What else counts as a bigot?

I genuinely do not know..

Biology is bigotry.

iklboo · 29/12/2017 20:21

Biology is bigotry?

Screepy · 29/12/2017 20:23

It used to have meaning, but these days, it just means anyone who disagrees with you.

A bigot is someone like Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage or Germaine Greer. Basically an evil hate filled person.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/12/2017 20:25

Germaine Greer?

This. Sadly. Generally when used about someone more rightwing than the accuser, but not always.

Here we go...

treaclesoda · 29/12/2017 20:27

I think I can see where this is leading...

ThisIsAStory · 29/12/2017 20:27

How do you define characteristic vs personality trait?

FabalaTheGreenGirl · 29/12/2017 20:28

Someone who is prejudiced against other people because of a certain characteristic. Someone who is unwilling to learn or change their opinions based on new information (and that last one is the crucial point, I think).

Germaine Greer is not a bigot.

ThisIsAStory · 29/12/2017 20:37

Peng So objectively, externally visible and observable?

So, 'thin people are smug' is bigotry but 'positivity is annoying' is not?

treaclesoda · 29/12/2017 20:38

Stating a fact does not make you a bigot. Hence Germaine Greer does not fall into that category.

For example, saying ' X is fat' is not bigoted. But saying 'X can't be trusted, because she is fat' is very much bigotry.

Ah, Germaine Greer - who doesn't accept the idea of the female penis Grin

lessworriedaboutthecat · 29/12/2017 20:39

@slapdasherie to you and I Germaine Greer is not a bigot to others she is. A bigot is in the eyes of the beholder.

Now personally and controversially I don't think either Tommy Robinson or Nigel Farage are bigots as such.

ThisIsAStory · 29/12/2017 20:43

OK, so what is the definition of 'things you are' then?

I mean that's the point right - under your definition of terms, is 'gender' a personality trait or a characteristic and who gets to decide?
