sick of xmas temping

i've got three more shifts left at a supermarket as a christmas temp. Im a graduate and only got this job as a stop gap over xmas whilst i was splitting up with exP and just needed some money.

Anyway I have 5 grad interviews coming up. The job is worsening my depression - i feel like a zombie all the way through the shifts - the work isn't hard at all, and I constantly look at the time. I feel like bursting into tears when im sat on the checkouts.

The shop constantly changes my hours, made me work xmas eve, xmas evening (express store) and boxing day.

AIBU to just call in sick for the last three shifts Sad

Do you need the money? If not then call in sick without another thought!

Glumglowworm · 27/12/2017 20:37

If you need the money and a decent reference then YABU

It’s only three shifts. You can absolutely get through it. Count down the hours, even the minutes if you have to

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/12/2017 20:39

What is it that is so bad for you about it? What's the issue?

ButchyRestingFace · 27/12/2017 20:39

I would absolutely do the last 3 shifts.

You may be glad of the money.

VimFuego101 · 27/12/2017 20:39

Do you need a reference from them?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 27/12/2017 20:41

Employers don't do references anymore

Splinterz · 27/12/2017 20:42

Employers don't do references anymore

Yes they do, even though they are tick box formalities.

NewIdeasToday · 27/12/2017 20:43

Hope you get a graduate job soon. Even if you do there will be times when the work is boring and deadlines/ requirements change at short notice.

So it would be best to just get on with this job and then use it to give concrete examples at interviews about times you’ve worked through adversity and built new skills.

Katescurios · 27/12/2017 20:45

You've made a commitment to work for this company, they have invested in training. It may only be a short term temp job but its pretty flaky of you to not only dump your employer in it bus also to level your colleagues having to cover your shifts because its a bit boring and the day drags.

fondayou · 27/12/2017 20:49

you're right, i am just home from a bad day of rude customers and feeling full of cold - feeling a bit sorry for myself!

I will finish the last 3 shifts

and I dont meaning boring as in "oh a bit boring" - ive worked in cafes and the like before, i mean 10 hours of scanning items is soul destroying !!

Finish the shifts. In real jobs there will be soul destroying times/ ups and downs. Treat this as a personal challenge. You have an end in sight and this is not a long term job for you so push through it. It is a good experience and it’s best not to quit as soon as things get a bit tough. You can then use this experience when interviewing for other longer term roles (the time I found my role challenging but managed to continue and finish what I set out to do etc)

InspMorse · 27/12/2017 21:47

Apart from changing your shifts, have they (manager/other staff ) been kind to you whilst you've worked there?
If so, do the last few shifts.
If not, call in sick & don't look back.

DampF0ggy · 28/12/2017 00:02

Do you need to go to a doctor if you are depressed? I guess you want the money in that case you should complete your shifts. I find your attitude disappointing, lots of people do a variety of jobs to pay their bills and take pride in the work that they do. You will be very lucky if you get future employment in a job that you enjoy. Employers will be looking for people who are flexible, do their jobs 1000% and do all the added extras and work odd hours. Employers want to hire the best candidate. Many jobs also involve working in a team. Good luck for the future
