to say no to 15 year old vaping?

Somethingfantastic89 · 23/12/2017 14:03

DD is 15 and she's asked me if she's allowed to vape. She says a lot of people at school do it (really?) and that I'm being unfair to say no. I know she doesn't smoke or anything. I don't like the idea that she might take up vaping and then feel tempted to try more. I would hate for her to switch to real cigarettes for example.
I myself vape but I'm in my 40s and I just quit smoking. I also know vaping is a lot safer BUT she's only 15 and she really doesn't need to start a bad habit just because. She's old enough to understand this and that this was the best way for me to quit the smelly nasty habit. It doesn't mean she can vape.
She's asked twice during the last month already and I don't want her to do it in secret but I really don't want her to vape. I started smoking in my late teens due to peer pressure and I struggled 20 years to quit.
WWYD?

No. It's stupid unless she smoked and wanted to quit
Can you get into why she wants to? Is it to join in or try it or...? I'm presuming she means no nicotine liquid

Somethingfantastic89 · 23/12/2017 14:10

Yes she means no nicotine liquid. She started asking when one of her classmates - not one of her close friends but a girl they all occasionally hang out with - started vaping. Her dad apparently thought it's no harm. He's very cool. I'm unfair. Always. I never let her do anything Grin
It's stupid unless she smoked and wanted to quit yes exactly, thank you.

My mum always said to me when I was 15 she said "don't do like us parents do, don't start to smoke, that's the stupidest thing you could do". I'd guess it's similar with vaping, and to this day I don't quite understand why one would want to do any of it to be honest.

Somethingfantastic89 · 23/12/2017 14:14

hevonbu I'm glad to hear you say that. I keep telling my DC that I didn't know how addictive it was when I started smoking and it was a stupid thing to do, and I disgusted myself for 20 years until I managed to quit. Hopefully none of them will even try.

I might add that my parents topped the offer by setting aside a sum of money every month I did not smoke, so as time went on it became clearer and clearer that it was a silly choice starting to smoke. (It never occurred to me at age 15, 16, 17.. I'd eventually inherit the money anyway.) I'm 53 now and happy I've never once smoked even one cigarette as it happens. (Mum however died from her smoking, as did dad come to think of it, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ending in acute pneumonia)

hevonbu · 23/12/2017 14:18

Hope you manage to quit. Another aspect is the money. I bet my parents threw away around £100,000 on their smoking habits throughout a thirty-year period. Better to have the money invested on the stock exchange if you ask me.

Ashamedandblamed · 23/12/2017 14:18

Wtf no definitely not !

Why would a 15 year old need to vape.

Stick to your guns. Say no op !Smile

Madness!

KingPrawnOkay · 23/12/2017 14:22

First off, well done for quitting smoking! No way should she start vaping, though. Decades ago everyone said cigarettes were good for you, and now it’s come back around with people saying vaping is good for you as opposed to cigarettes. It probably is but at the end of the day vaping is a relatively new thing and I always say in a few years time it’ll all come out the chemicals and whatnot in the vape liquids will cause just as much harm. Using it to ease out of smoking is one thing but intentionally deciding to take up vaping for something to do is horrifically stupid! Stand your ground and keep saying no.

cakeymccakington · 23/12/2017 14:23

Yadnbu.

Why not cost it up and show her how much money she'd waste that could otherwise be spent on make up/ clothes/ whatever else 15 yr olds like

That also gives her the idea to say to her friends "no way I'd rather spend all that money on x"

Orangedragonfly · 23/12/2017 14:25

My 16 year old DS wanted a vape for Christmas I said no. He couldn't understand why because he said it was harmless but I won't buy one for him. He can wait until he is old enough to buy it himself if he wants.

Fairylea · 23/12/2017 14:25

No way! Shock

My dd is the same age and it would be an absolute no from me.

I think it’s great if people are trying to quit smoking but long term we don’t know the damage it might do to people’s lungs. My mum has copd through long term smoking and I have moderate asthma and I wouldn’t want dd inhaling anything into her lungs that didn’t need to be there!

ReginaldMolehusband · 23/12/2017 14:32

Just tell her it's illegal for retailers to sell ecigs to under 18s and it's illegal for adults to buy ecigs for under 18s. Job done.
Suppose if you feel the need you could ask her where these other kids are getting their ecigs and report them to trading standards.

Somethingfantastic89 · 23/12/2017 14:47

hev a friend of mine had promised her son £2000 if he reaches 18 without taking up smoking.** He's 14 but so far it's working Smile

I will stick to my guns and say no to DD vaping.** I think it's peer pressure but where would we be if we gave in to that every time! She'll have to be uncool as far as smoking is concerned Grin

And yes, the illegal bit, definitely.

I vaped to give up the fags and it helped and I still have the odd vape now but I try to avoid it as I get the same horrible dried out mouth the morning after as I did with the ciggies. Vaping is a bad habit- like biting your nails or picking your nose- not a fashion statement

lljkk · 23/12/2017 15:23

It's addictive & expensive. It can be bad for your health. People will complain that you smell bad. Nothing good in it.

You can hang out with smokers without joining in (I've done it, DS does it).

MTSANDSTONE · 18/09/2019 17:35

Hey something fantastic 89. Could I speak to you further about this?

ariamontgomery · 18/09/2019 21:12

Vaping is awful and can cause some horrible diseases, and we don’t even know the full extent of the damage it can cause yet! I’d not let her and I’d quit myself.
