To think I have a "stress cough"

Just that really. I have a persistent cough atm, but happens so often and usually happens when I am run down- following a cold or run down.
This has been going on for a long time. Could it be related to stress?

Coughing can be a habit and you can be given breathing exercises to control it.

speakout · 22/12/2017 20:00

NeilPetar I can understand that, but it;s not a dry cough, I need to bring up mucous to enable breathing, I can hear it gurgle and rasp, coughing expels that so I can breathe more freely. I can expel into a tissue, but usually just swallow.

I think I suffer from the postnasal drip! I didn't know there's a name for something I have been suffering from forever. I don't cough though. Just swallow the mucus.

I was nearly 40 before I found out about post nasal drip, finally getting a name for something I'd always suffered from. FWIW OP I grew up with smokers too.

I would certainly look into the possibility of asthma, even if it's just to rule it out.

I have atypical asthma and my biggest symptom is coughing. When my asthma is slowly getting worse I start getting a lot more mucous and would frequently have to clear my throat. I have been diagnosed with asthma about 4 or 5 times now because some smart ass decides I in fact don't have asthma and stops my prescriptions of inhalers. I then get poorly and then get diagnosed with asthma Hmm

I can always tell when my dh was stressed or anxious as he started to cough not a proper cough more like an anxious tick type of cough he certainly has no congestion or anything, he never realised he was doing it until I pointed it out, he now seems to have it under control and tends to use his breathing now to help with stress etc.

Try an intranasal steroid, you can get these over the counter at any pharmacy. Then see GP after 1/12 to report on the effect and ask for peak flow diary monitoring. Spirometry cannot rule out asthma but it is encouraging that it was normal.
If PEF monitoring is normal and the intranasal steroid has no effect, I would be looking at referral to ENT to look at your larynx. If everything looks normal, respiratory physio is worth a try

Forgot to add, if everything is normal, then yes, you may have psychogenic cough
