new blue passports?

To not be convinced over new blue passports in 2019? I get why they are doing it to show we are not part of the EU etc. But, will we have to pay for them? At £70 a pop, likely to be a very nice revenue earner for the government. Does anyone know if we will need to pay for them or will they get swapped like for like?

You’ll get one when your old one expires. That’s all.

skippy67 · 22/12/2017 13:21

You'll have to pay for them.

Pickleypickles · 22/12/2017 13:22

They will be fazed out gradually.

LemonRedwood · 22/12/2017 13:22

I don't think you'll need to worry about it until you actually have to renew.

That's what happened last time anyway. Lots of people still had old style blue/black covers while people with newer passports had burgundy ones.

UrsulaPandress · 22/12/2017 13:23

When your passport is due for renewal, the new one will be blue.

exexpat · 22/12/2017 13:23

I presume that you will just get the new kind when your old one runs out - they wouldn't make the whole country renew their passports simultaneously.

My current passport expires next month, so I will get a new EU one, and I hope that by the time I need to renew it again we will be back in the EU (or will never actually have left).

jelliebelly · 22/12/2017 13:23

You’ll just get a new version when yours expires I should think - the system will crash if they try to reissue new ones for everybody at once!

glenthebattleostrich · 22/12/2017 13:24

They are being phased in so it'll just be the same as renewing them. And we already pay £72 for them, it won't be any different.

foxyloxy78 · 22/12/2017 13:25

Ah phew. Yes that makes sense to phase them in gradually.

They used to be blue covers before.

And I'd imagine when your passport expires your new one will be blue.

Pantah630 · 22/12/2017 13:30

Pretty sure my old passports were black, not blue.

Ifailed · 22/12/2017 13:33

Pantah630 Yep, they were a very dark blue.

user1471596238 · 22/12/2017 13:57

Apparently we could have had blue all the time if we had wanted as burgundy was not obligatory.

Pantah630 · 22/12/2017 14:00

Didn't think I was imaging it, I've still got it filed somewhere.

Ifailed · 22/12/2017 14:06

Pantah630 I have dug out some old passports, the newest ones from the 90s are a very dark blue, older ones are black. This could just be ageing, though.

PUER125 · 24/12/2017 08:15

My passport expires in Spring 2019. AIBU in foregoing a Summer holiday that year so I can apply for a lovely blue passport in the October? I should hate to be one of the last people to still have a burgundy one.

bigbluebus · 24/12/2017 08:20

Mine's due for renewal in April. I'm glad I'll retain my European one for many years to come. Was wondering if it will make any difference when we go through Passport Control in other European countries if i still have the European one instead of a British one?
