Crossing the Road

Firstly- I know jay walking is a thing & happens everywhere, but in the past week at the same set of lights, I have seen several grown adults walk straight out into the road in front of cars as if they are hoping to get killed.

These lights have got a pedestrian crossing, it is a 3 way junction & the "main" road is busy, comes down a hill.

On Tuesday, pedestrian lights turned red, normal pause in the lights, then the road lights went green. Couple looked at the red man and walked out anyway. Bus was pulling away from lights, blasted them with the horn, she leapt back onto the path, he gave the bus the finger & strolled on regardless & nearly got flattened by a motorbike in outside lane who wouldn't have been able to see him with the bus.

Wednesday- road lights are green & have been for quite a while, woman walks straight out into the road despite there being 2 lanes of cars coming towards her & defiantly stares down all the beeps.

Yesterday evening- car turning left, indicator on, man walks straight out as the car begins to turn, physically hit by the wing mirror, car stops, pedestrian punches the car, gives the driver an earful of abuse & keeps walking.

Why? We learn in primary school how to the cross the road! Why do people do this? These are not phone zombies either. It is only a matter of time before something like Tuesday happens where another vehicle CANT see you & hits you.

Maybe because traffic lights are always set to keep the traffic flowing? You can easily wait 2mins for a "green man", which doesn't sound a lot, but repeated at every road crossing it adds up to a lot over the course of a journey.

Especially when it is raining

This does my head in! I used to live near a big 6 lane 40 mile an hour a road and there were lights at perfectly reasonable intervals, I used to have to cross it to get to work and never found it an issue... however people used to peg across it at night in dark clothing Angry

I'm all for it. I think we need more militant pedestrianism. Drivers have had it all their way for far too long.

People are quite mad.

However, the pedestrian that was on the that the car was turning into had right of way. Not the car in that instance.

I often see people crossing busy A roads when there is a pedestrian crossing a few metres away, and occasionally see people crossing when the red man is on instead. It's dangerous. One of DH's uncles was killed by a motorbike when crossing the road.

The chap on the turn walked into the side of the car (the left turn filter was green) as the car had already begun to commit & the pedestrian light was red.

I have no issue with people nipping across in a gap, but to deliberately walk straight out in front of a vehicle & expect it to stop for you is going to get someone killed.
