Is entering competitions a waste of time?

AIBU to enter loads of online competitions while we sit in front of the TV of an evening? Usually I'd be browsing Pinterest or something equally unproductive... but I could actually win something right?
Saying that, I've just done a few, and they say I can enter every day if I like. That makes me think my chances are incredibly small. When I was little my dad won quite a few comps, I'm guessing with the internet things are more competitive? :D
You may be able to tell, I'm new to this. Am I wasting my time?

Yep

afrikat · 20/12/2017 19:02

My step mum has entered competitions for years and won tons of stuff including several holidays and a massive trampoline. She enters dozens every week though I think

Chapman31 · 20/12/2017 19:13

I do it when I’m not busy and have won a few bits and bobs over the year. I don’t do it every day though.

Trailedanderror · 20/12/2017 19:16

It's not as profitable as pre internet days but still worth it. I've won a £50 fuel voucher, £100 from Mumsnet and a Nespresso machine in the last couple of years and probably only entered half a dozen competitions in that time.

Bambamber · 20/12/2017 19:17

I enter competitions from reputable companies if I come across them. I've won a few bits and pieces over the last few months

foxessocks · 20/12/2017 19:17

No I don't think it is, I've won quite a few over the years and it passes the time sometimes! Our last win was VIP tickets for country file live in the summer which was great!

gamerwidow · 20/12/2017 19:20

It’s hit and miss you have to enter 100s a month, sometimes you’ll have a run of luck but sometimes you’ll get nothing for months.
I’ve won a lot over the years but I’ve hit a dry spell for the last few months.

goose1964 · 20/12/2017 19:21

It is but you need to enter hundreds a day to get regular wins.A lot of prizes are small, books , DVDs,make up etc. The large prizes are few and far between. It is NOT a way of making easy money despite the articles in the press.

Marcipex · 20/12/2017 19:22

I've won a silver bracelet, and several Trollbeads and silver charms.
DD has won Rocketdog shoes, boots, and zoo tickets.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 20/12/2017 19:22

Yes, it is worth it. I do it in front of the TV fairly persistently (maybe 50 competitions a day) and win once a month on average. It is down to luck on the one hand but is a numbers game on the other hand, if that makes sense? I have won all sorts.

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 20/12/2017 19:23

I never win anything, but probably don't enter that many competitions.

But this week, both my mum and me won a bouquet of flowers, and we entered separately!!!
Massive bunch arrived yesterday!!!
Xmas Grin

FuzzyCustard · 20/12/2017 19:24

I won a box of joke noses 30 years ago.

Marcipex · 20/12/2017 19:27

DD has won Bing toys and books.

CaptainHammer · 20/12/2017 19:30

I recently won a £200 amazon voucher so will be entering more from now on!
DH’s colleague enters loads and has won so much. Things like holidays, car, meeting famous people etc.

AppleKatie · 20/12/2017 19:32

Where do people find 100s of competitions to enter every month?

CuthbertDibble · 20/12/2017 19:36

What’s the phrase? Got to be in it to win it. I got really lucky a few years ago and won a flat in London!

Longdistance · 20/12/2017 19:37

I enter now and then, but have never won anything worth mentioning. My dB has fun with it, and enters whatever he can. He’s won a bike before, an expensive watch, fragrance sets and men’s facial shite. He just casually mentions it now if he’s won anything. I hope he doesn’t do that if he wins the lottery.

Noofly · 20/12/2017 19:40

I go through spells where I work my way through the competitions on the MSE forum. Then I get bored and stop. Grin I once worked out that on average I won a prize roughly every 800 entries. Have won some pretty cool stuff though.

Independentstateofeyebrows · 20/12/2017 19:41

My NY resolution one year was to seek out and enter more competitions. By the end of the year I'd won a bookGrin

aneres · 20/12/2017 20:04

I've won loads but enter quite a lot of comps. I've won a holiday, new decking, a new mattress, home security, craft items, kids stuff, a trip in England with spends, 2 x new TV's and lots of smaller things.

You do have to enter a lot, I use Money Saving Expert, there's a board on the forum call competition time with loads of comps posted.

MsHopey · 21/12/2017 05:10

I really don't enter very often. I was flicking through one of my husband's fitness magazines once, there was a competition to win £250 of protein powders, protein cereals, protein pancake mix, the list goes on and on. I only bloody won!
Someone has to, if you can be arsed , go for it.

LolitaLempicka · 21/12/2017 05:17

A flat in London?!?

ILoveMillhousesDad · 21/12/2017 05:53

I used to work with a woman who entered 'slogan' competitions who amongst other this, won a trip to Florence, a brand new, fitted magnet kitchen and oddly enough, the duck house that the MP bought from expenses (it was a comp in the Gaurdian)

There is a whole different world apparently, where these slogan people, have get togethers and discuss their wins.

sahmummy80 · 21/12/2017 06:59

It's not, the more you enter the more chance you have obviously. I've won over the years:
A digital camera
Day out in Bath to meet England rugby team at their training camp
Lunch at a local restaurant
T shirt
Simple products
Tyrell crisps box of

I haven't entered that many so maybe just had luck on my side.

Ecclesiastes · 21/12/2017 07:09
