A couple of weeks ago I ordered a wooden kitchen with washing machine for my daughters birthday (I can't link to it due to it being removed from the website) on Friday I received an email from asda warning that the quality was not quite to the standard and to check it out before giving it as a gift.

I checked it over and mentioned the paintwork was not great and asked if it was an health and safety thing or just cosmetic issues. I was assured that it was just cosmetic and the kitchen would be fine.

Move on to Monday I put up the kitchen for my daughters birthday and within 24 hours of light use the piece of wood at the bottom has split off and as this holds the door in place that has come off to and in doing so a small bit of plastic came loose that may have choked a smaller child.

After the first email regarding the quality I received an offer of 10% off and a 5£ voucher after updating them on the wood splitting they have offered another £5 voucher.

AIBU in thinking this is not good enough and to warn anyone with a wooden kitchen from asda to check out the quality of it before you use it.

I’d be returning it for a full refund.

fretfulsmarties · 20/12/2017 07:29

We bought the same one, already put up and being used for her birthday. Nothing has broken but I will be pissed off if it does.

I got the same email and am intending to respond but it wasn't just cosmetic, though there were some scuffs. One of the assembly points was drilled completely wrong and my dw spent about an hour reworking it so that it could be assembled.

Tbh, I'm annoyed about the scuffs and would have liked a replacement but DW spent 3 hours building it when I was asleep so I didn't want to have to get it replaced and have her spend another 3 hours the night before DDs birthday rebuilding.

If I were you I'd be pushing for a full replacement, that's not safe. I'll be keeping a close eye on ours now.

10% off is ridiculous. I would want all of my money back. I’ve a wooden kitchen which is still going strong that is more than ten years old. We changed it into a vets about six years ago and it’s still played with a lot. And it’s been on a shipping container to Australia and back. A toy like a kitchen is a long term toy.

It’s this one but the older version.

Savoy that's exactly what I thought we've had plastic ones for other kids but saved up to buy a wooden one to last then this happens is really disappointing.
Smarties I had similar issues putting it together took a lot more effort than it should if I had realised it had structural problems before I put it up I would have sent it back and got one else where. Now ilk have to try and sort a new one then sort a return.
I just wanted to warn anyone that has it for Christmas it may actually be unsafe

Refund has been agreed and contact with another department regarding the issues so hopefully they may take it seriously now and warn other customers

We had a series of Asda dollies that legs broke as soon as they were out of the packet. Not dangerous but pretty devastating to a 3 year old. Eventually got a different one.

CottK2013 · 20/12/2017 18:41

Thanks for the warning. I've got this kitchen for my lg for Xmas. I've just opened the box to assemble and check it based on your comments to find the instructions are missing and I have no idea where to start!! Asda are being less than helpful.
Do any of you have a copy of the instructions you could possibly send me pretty please?!
Argh not what I need a few days before the big day! Thanks for the warning though.

BackBoiler · 20/12/2017 18:46

The ikea kitchen is brilliant if you need a replacement. We have had it four years now, its took a lot of battering and even lived in the shed (mock playhouse) during the summer months to get it out of the house and it is still in fabulous condition.

Amanduh · 20/12/2017 18:50

Our asda one is the same and absolutely brilliant. Still standing! Our ikea one was rubbish though. Wonder if this asda thing was just a bad batch?

prettycunning · 20/12/2017 18:53

Yer they said it's a new manufacturer or something like that so it's the new batch that have the issues. I should have instructions I'll have a check tomorrow and let you know

Would you be able to post a picture of the front, Dd has one for Christmas from my in laws and I'm not sure if it's this one or not!

FresasAndFrambuesas · 20/12/2017 19:12

If it's faulty, they really need to be refunding the full price or replacing it for a not- faulty one! FWIW we have an Ikea one, it's 3.5 years old with no problems.

Also as a side note, @SavoyCabbage how exactly did you turn it into a vet? I think my dd would LOVE that, she's not really too into the kitchen as a kitchen

WendyLikesSaltyTruffles · 20/12/2017 19:30

We bought an asda wooden kitchen 12 months ago (£80) and every single door and hinge snapped off within about 3 months. And it wasn't even the DCs fault as one of them came off on my hand as I gently opened it to tidy the play food up! Awful quality. Can't re attach them either as the wood is so thin it snapped with the hinge.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/12/2017 19:33

That's shocking that they'd happily sell toys that they were fully aware were sub standard Shock. Of course they should fully refund.

LIZS · 20/12/2017 19:40

Also contact trading standards, if it is a defect complaints may trigger a recall

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 20/12/2017 19:43

We've had this JL one for just over five years and still going strong!

My friend bought this for her ds birthday and the washing machine part wont fit in the frame. She had to give it to him half made.

CottK2013 · 21/12/2017 08:24

Thank you for checking if you have the instructions - it'll be a lifesaver if you do!

Smcmullan88 · 23/12/2017 19:54

Hi

Does anyone have the instructions for this please ?

None in the box nightmare for xmas

SavoyCabbage · 23/12/2017 20:07

@FresasAndFrambuesas I can take a photo after Christmas as it's behind the tree at the moment.

Basically we painted the doors black, prised off the wooden hob and recovered the top with sticky back plastic that looks like metal. We used a permanent marker to draw bars on the Perspex oven to make it into a cage. Hot glued a wooden ruler on for measuring the animals.

We used bottles and things from the kitchen and relabelled them. Filled jars with beads for medication and glue gunned the lid closed. Kept the wooden eggs for snake eggs...

Then added a toy dog carrier, bits and bobs from the doctor set, scales, x-ray photos, notebooks and clipboards etc.

RocketPockets · 23/12/2017 20:33

I know a few people who bought this kitchen and they’ve all had a full refund from Asda for it. I’m fairly sure my mil has got my DS a kitchen for Christmas and I’m hoping it isn’t this one!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 23/12/2017 21:01

I bought a doll house for dd from asda and got a similar email a few days ago asking me to check it due to quality issues.

A small part of the wood was a little warped, but nothing major, but I phoned the number provided anyway just to be sure there were no other issues. They refunded the full price immediately, lots of apologies, despite me making it clear how minute the issue is - weird they were so good in comparison with your experience op - hopefully they've improved their service and policies!
