To be dreading going back to work

Going through finances and it's not adding up. I'm going to have to go back to my old job and I can't start back until the 22nd which means I'll definitely be working Christmas eve, Christmas day and boxing day. Away for new years.

I'm just moaning about it! I had so looked forward to Christmas with my children.

sorry for moan! Aibu to be gutted??

Can't really afford it ... especially with going away for new year, I am gutted though. I need to call them but have been putting it off.

Do you not have to give a notice period before going back? I have to give 8 weeks notice in writing of my return to work following maternity

Maybe they'll already has rostered the Christmas days and you wont need to work those ones

I would have thought you'd need to give notice. Surely Christmas staffing cover was sorted ages ago?

Lets hope the emergency services, the armed forced, the NHS etc dont all take the 'is it really necessary to go to work' attitude

I don't think you can bemoan working over Christmas and missing it if you are going away for New Year. It's just a priority thing. I hope you have a lovely time eitherway.

I would make sure they will have you back though - you do have to give notice. Mine had to be formal and in writing, 8 weeks in advance.

I'd choose to be home for Christmas and cancel my holiday

You may not be able to get back travelling costs but may save on spending money if you cancel New Year.

The holiday rotas for those professions would have been worked out a long time ago so I doubt the OP (who we are responding to) is a member of any of them.

To be able to go back to work at such short notice gives me the impression she might be doing agency work, hence having to pick up the shifts others have turned down?

Maybe OP will come back and clarify.

Sorry only just saw this, it's agency work and yes maternity leave. We booked to go away for Christmas ages ago but since then we had some very unexpected costings and I guess we could cancel but it is paid for apart from some bits. I didn't mean to complain just having a bit of a whinge.

Also it's always the same if I go away, I dread going back, feel sick about it, then when I am back it is fine.
