So today I did a pregnancy test and it was a very faint line in the pregnancy window so I assume pregnancy although I'd much prefer it to be a false negative. However I've just gone to the toilet and noticed I've started bleeding rather heavily and it's really dark red. Is this possibly a miscarriage or my period that is about 2 weeks late? Roughly I believe I'm 4 weeks pregnant. Thank you!

I think at this stage it would just be classed as your period. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though but a friend of mine who is a doctor said that all the tests available which you can do earlier and earlier are very misleading as only 25% of pregnancies actually 'stick'. So I personally would class it as a period rather than miscarriage.

MeadowHay · 13/12/2017 18:12

Yeah I would say it's a period too. Tbh it's really not uncommon to occasionally have a late period, lots of things can interrupt your monthlies, stress especially.

PersianCatLady · 13/12/2017 18:17

When was your last period??

When you say 4 weeks pregnant, do you mean from your last period or from when you think you might have conceived??

JustGandering36 · 13/12/2017 18:58

It's 4 weeks since I conceived as, even though this sounds bad, I sleep with the same guy every few weeks and that was the last time I had sex.

You'd be around 6 weeks then pregnancy's counted from last period not conception

I agree.

6 weeks ago - last period
4 weeks ago - ovulation and possible conception

Seems odd but it is referred to as 6 weeks pregnant.

Your concern is that you are bleeding, perhaps it is a late period, who knows?

Why don't you see what happens and seek medical advice to be on the safe side??

I think the stats for pgs this early are something like 75% chance of miscarriage, but as it’s so early on most women usually put it down to late periods. But again, this early on there’s a slight chance you may have had a false positive to begin with.

GlitteryFluff · 13/12/2017 20:30

At 6 weeks I would have thought the test wouldn’t be faint, it would be strong.
So I would take it that you may have been pregnant, and have miscarried, hence the faint line and period arriving late. Flowers

GlitteryFluff · 13/12/2017 20:31

Either that or period is just late and you’ve had a false positive or it was an evap line. But if you have regular periods then maybe not.

JustGandering36 · 14/12/2017 07:54

So I've done another test this morning and it was negative but I had woken up to have bled through my pad and pj's with very dark blood that was full of clots. I'm very regular with my periods and have never experienced anything like this. I've managed to secure a doctors appointment this morning so will be getting checked to see what has happened. Thank you all for your advice x

It sounds like a "chemical pregnancy" ie one that produced sufficient hcg you show up on a test but the pregnancy failed before a heartbeat would have been detectable by scan.
By six weeks pregnant your test should have been a strong positive if the pregnancy was viable. The fact that it was weak suggests that the pregnancy had already failed although it had yet to come away.
It is possible to bleed in early pregnancy and still be pregnant but three fact that you've now tested negative indicates that is not the case. It also explains the heavier than normal "period" (v. Early miscarriage).
The alternative is that you were not pregnant and got a false positive but these are rare. Evaporation lines are a thing but tend to be very pale grey like a shadow, with no colour.
Hope you're feeling ok.
