Cheap black/brown dolls!

bollybhaji · 10/12/2017 21:57

I work for a charity that works with lots of disadvantaged young children from predominantly African and South Asian backgrounds.

My colleagues and I have been trying in vain to find cheap black and brown dolls to be used as Christmas presents for the kids. We’ve looked online and everything is well out of our price range!

Am I being unreasonable to think that we should be able to find cheap black and brown dolls…or are we just not there yet?!

Would also be grateful for any suggestions for companies/businesses who might want to donate them!

Katescurios · 10/12/2017 22:15

bridgetreilly · 10/12/2017 22:20

What is your price range?

AfunaMbatata · 10/12/2017 22:22

Home bargains stores have black and mixed baby dolls in stores atm.

Owletterocks · 10/12/2017 22:24

My dd has this doll www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/toys/fashion-and-dolls/dolls/lots-to-love-babies-bath-time/p/129105 not sure how cheap you mean though

GlitterGlue · 10/12/2017 22:26

What's your budget?

Early learning do a black doll, but it seems to have gone up a bit since we bought one - now £12. However there might be a discount code knocking around.

WildRosesGrow · 10/12/2017 22:35

There are boy and girl dolls with brown skin for £7.49 at Toysrus, I think to get a specific colour you would need to go in store and choose:

You could try approaching the managers of the chain toy stores near you, e.g. The Entertainer, Toys R Us, Argos, Early Learning Centre, Mothercare, and explaining what you are asking for and see if they have any clearance stock or any flexibility on price.

LivininaBox · 10/12/2017 22:42

I got one on line at Toys R Us, it was difficult to find because I was searching for "black doll" and they had it listed as "ethnic doll" Confused

ebay

MrGrumpy01 · 10/12/2017 22:59

Doll's World (brand) make one. I think there is a more expensive boxed version but theChris also a cheaper one that is just the doll in a plastic bag type package.

Swirlingasong · 10/12/2017 23:04

Lottie dolls do some - not cheap but you could ask if they would donate? Really, really cheap I saw some Barbie type dolls with brown skin in Poundland last week.

Osirus · 11/12/2017 00:18

John Lewis do a newborn black doll for about £10.

manicinsomniac · 11/12/2017 00:32

Are you only collecting new toys?

You can get anything on eBay if you're willing to buy second hand. Christmas Fairs and Charity Shops too if you have time to bargain hunt.

I'd never buy a new toy - I don't see the point.

Bumblebee (superhero) doll tenner on amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01AWGZXLC/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

Allthetuppences · 11/12/2017 08:21

Can you approach a local branch of one of the bigger companies? There are usually "community budgets" for them to get free local advertising? It might not be ideal if the service users are very vulnerable of course to raise the profile.

Have a look at blackbeautydolls.com, they have loads of different kinds and helped my friend to find a doll with afro hair for her daughter
