To want a cat :(

LEMtheoriginal · 10/12/2017 09:39

I can't have one and it makes me really sad.

I work with them so I do get cuddles mostly bitten and scratched I can't get too attached because they aren't mine and have their own mummies and daddies maids and butlers

I want kitty headbuts and to just sit and watch tv with a cat on my lap. I want the connection with an animal tgat choses it.

I look at cat clips on youtube and love tgeir general haughtiness and attitude.

I can't though. I have two terriers that would probably hurt a cat and a stupid allergic DP that flatly refuses to live on antihistamines Angry

Have DP pts, rehome the terriers and get the cat(s). Sometimes you just need to make the right decisions.

VegasWithRadishes · 10/12/2017 09:44

Have DP put to sleep.
Teach the dogs who's boss (the cat)
Job done.

VegasWithRadishes · 10/12/2017 09:47

In seriousness I accidentally ended up with a kitten, already had 2 dogs. One is very large (but docile and stupid) one was a rescue terrier (some aggression towards other animals).
The first time the kitten and smaller dog met the dog snapped at the kitten, kitten did that thing where they hiss and triple in size then stuck her claws in his ballsack after jumping on top of him.
They had peaceful albeit cold arrangements with each other Grin
Still have the large dog and kitten (now cat) but the terrier was unfortunately pts due to injury.

DotDashBeep · 10/12/2017 09:51

I would love a cat but this road is so busy Sad

I used to have two cats and a rotweiller. Dp's allergy has got more severe as he gets older and he makes me breakfast in bed every day.

To help you feel better here’s a photo of mine taken just now snuggled up on the bed with me. It’s snowing heavily outside so I think we will spend a lot of the day here!

GriefLeavesItsMark · 10/12/2017 09:53

Having the dp put to sleep is a bit harsh. Is there a shed or out building he could live i

Ruhrpott · 10/12/2017 09:55

Well if dp makes breakfast in bed everyday I’d keep him Wink

TheVoiceOfTreason · 10/12/2017 09:56

Refusing to live on antihistamines isn't stupid as apparently you build up a tolerance to them if you use them too often!

I feel your pain anyway. Rented accommodation and baby on the way, so no cat for me. I had bad asthma as a kid so we can't/won't get a cat even after we've bought until the kids are a bit older and we've established whether they have any allergy issues....

You have dogs though!! They generally give more affection back than cats anyway, right?! Smile

LEMtheoriginal · 10/12/2017 09:58

But he isn't a cat though a big ginger cat is my dream cat. Oh and a Siamese and a sphynx and a Maine coon and Abyssinian and moggie. Just all the cats really.

having the dp put to sleep is a bit harsh.

Typical wishy-washy mumsnet thinking. Being pts may well be the best solution.

Thesmallthings · 10/12/2017 09:59

There may be good news.

It's not cat fur that he's allergic to... it's stuff in the fur... and some cats don't produce this.

You just need to find one that he's ok with....

They also do special shampoo that's helps reduce it to.

A friend was allergic to the point she's comes up in red patches if she strokes a cat or sneeze in their precedence. She found a stranded cat once and had no reaction to her.. she ended up keeping her.

Also... don't get rid of dp.... you'll miss breaker in bed to much Xmas Grin

HRTpatch · 10/12/2017 09:59

I do like a cat.
But then I remember PissingCat who had to be pts because of dementia.

ShiftyMcGifty · 10/12/2017 10:01

I have two. Neither will curl up on my lap while I’m watching tv. I get headbutted by one at the exact moment I’m drifting off to sleep. Every night. The fucker must be watching me carefully, and his timing is impeccable after years of practice. The other one will start meowing in middle of the night, room to room “looking” for me until I’m awake enough to reply back to her. Like she doesn’t know which bed I’m in every night! Then she will proceed to curl up on my head and starts to knead until she has successful ousted me off my own pillow. Grin

YABU. Our cats are absolute arseholes.

MadForlt · 10/12/2017 10:03

I'm allergic to cats, and I have two. Over time I have developed a tolerance to them and now only react if I pet them then rub my eyes before I was my hands. I used to wake up with cold like symptoms every morning. I never used anti histamines.

FlakeBook · 10/12/2017 10:04

Mine shat on my bed this morning. You can have him.

GiveMeTheTeaAndNobodyGetsHurt · 10/12/2017 10:06

I really want a cat too, and also can't have one due to living in a rental. When we eventually buy, it's likely that we'll only be able to afford a flat, or a house near a main road, but that doesn't stop me spending far too much time on the local cat rescue's website dreaming about which cat I'm going to adopt...

LEMtheoriginal · 10/12/2017 10:06

Thesmallthings - it is actually the saliva that generally causes the allergy and yes he is not so reactive to all cats. However this is changeable. Sometimes he reacts to my work clothes or even if I've touched a cat in the street. It's all very weird convenient

total sympathy OP.
We have a lovely cat, cuddly and gentle and never misbehaves.

Now we also have a dog. Recent arrival, very lovely, but he wants to play with the cat, and cat isn't interested.

cat now lives in our bedroom, and slided up and downstairs around dog.

I am hoping that time will improve their relationship

LEMtheoriginal · 10/12/2017 10:08

I'll just have to make do with dog but he makes a rubbish cat

Every time you are tempted, remember the cat who worked out the difference between sleeping non-functional tin-openers, and alert and functioning tin-openers, was the eye-lids. And who perfected the technique of inserting a claw under the eye-lid to prise it open.

Rebeccaslicker · 10/12/2017 10:11

I'd give anything for a cat.

Sadly I am the most genetically weak allergic fool in the universe (and we have 2 budgies, one of whom can't fly, so that's not really a fair contest!!).

Bah. I LOVE cats. And dogs. Forever denied :(

maddiemookins16mum · 10/12/2017 10:17

My 17 year old cat has started middle of the night yowling and pooing over the edge of her litter tray 😔. Vets tomorrow for a check up and bloods possibly.
