Waiting in car park.

So, dh is off work. Dd1 is at school. We've decided to go christmas shopping together with my DS who is a little under the weather but not so poorly that he'd need to stay in. He fell asleep in the car so when we got to the shopping centre, I said DH should go in and make a start and I'd wait in the car with DS as transferring him to the pushchair always wakes him and I'd like him to sleep. A guy has just come over and nearly knocked my window out, swearing at me for taking up a space. There are other spaces available. I explained my husband was in shopping but he suggested I should get out of the space. He Called me a selfish bitch. I think if I Was alone I'd have kept driving and not parked but with a limited time before going back for the school run, we wanted to get stuff done. Also if the car park was full and I could see people wanting spaces, Id move. AIBU to park whilst baby sleeps?

It's free parking but if it wasn't, I'd pay.

He is being very unreasonable, and I bet he wouldn't be so aggresive if it was your DH in the car with your DS.

It shook me a little. I can normally hold my ground in a disagreement but he caught me off guard. He was really aggressive. So much for Christmas cheer and all that...

"Fuck off" window up and ignore. If he continued banging and yelling I would have got out my mobile, dialled 999 in his sight and held it to my ear (not pressed to call). Guaranteed he would have pissed off. What a twat.

Even if there were no spaces left he would have been out of order.

You were there first, it made no difference if you were in the car or the car was empty.
I find people get ruder the closer it gets to Christmas.

He's being incredibly unreasonable. He has no idea why you're sitting there. You are waiting for someone. Yes, that someone is your DH, but it could be a teenage child, or you're collecting an elderly parent who has no mobile and is meeting you at a specific point, or a friend who is unwell. Or you could be having a minor medical emergency yourself and just needed to sit down for awhile because you felt unwell and you stayed in your car. It would be different if you were parked somewhere you shouldn't be (like disabled bay and you aren't disabled) or blocking an entrance. But you're sitting in your car legally parked where you should be.

YANBU. If you weren’t sat in it, the car would still be there. what are you supposed to do, drive round in circles til DH comes out?

Were you sat in the drivers seat which might have given him the impression you would be moving? If so, sit on passenger side.

What if you couldn’t drive?

The guy is a knob.

So this man swore at you because your car was parked in a shopping centre car park while your family used the shopping centre? It makes absolutely no difference to him if one person in the car was using the shopping centre or half a dozen people, you were parked legitimately to Use the centre. Pillock.

Why on earth would you be U?

Even if there was no other space, I would still have stayed in my car! People nap, phone, have lunch, read the paper in their car, it's a free country.

As long as you have a valid ticket - if applicable - are not parked in a "drop off" point, who cares if you are in or out of the car!

I would sit in the passenger seat, to avoid any confusion about me leaving soon, but that's the end of it.

The man is an idiot to say the least. Totally out of order to threaten someone like that.

What did he want you to do? Drive around until your husband was ready to leave? I can guarantee if it was your husband sat there he wouldn't have said anything. Nasty little man.

YANBU. You have paid for your space.

OK, it's annoying when people are looking for spaces and we see somebody sitting in a car in a space, and we're left wondering what's taking them so long to leave when the lights are on, the exhaust is running, maybe the reverse lights are even on and the car is not moving..

... but this is completely different! You're not leaving, you are parked, you are staying, you are not giving any car signs that you are about to leave and you have your space. The man is nasty bit of work.

What on earth was he accusing you of? Parking in a carpark? You're allowed to sit in your car.

It's lucky you didn't start the engine and accidentally drive over his feet in your panic to vacate the space.

I had a man wag his finger at me this morning while I was carrying out a perfectly legal manoevre in the car. he made a mistake. But felt the need to wag his finger at me. FFS
