Freaking out over second hand mattress!

Please feel free to tell me I’m overreacting!
We recently bought a cot from Gumtree and when we collected the guy told us the mattress was new and had only been used a couple of times (at his mother’s house). The mattress looks clean, doesn’t smell and had a clean cover on it (which we replaced with our own).
My baby has been sleeping on it for about a week now and I’ve only just realised why second hand mattresses are a SIDS risk. Have just gone online and ordered a new mattress to be delivered ASAP but AIBU to want to get her out and put her back in her Moses basket tonight? Am I being a bit PFB about this?
Basically, someone please tell me my baby’s ok.

If it was me, I would honestly put her back in her moses basket for now as long as it's safe for her to be back in there. Even though it increases the risk of SIDS the risk is still small. She would probably be absolutely fine, but I wouldn't use a second hand mattress for myself so I wouldn't use one for my baby, especially knowing there's risks.

Do you have a travel cot or something you could use temporarily? Tbh if it has hardly been used and has had a cover on i would have thought it would be ok but i know you night jutlst want piece of mind

Your baby will almost certainly be okay. In the past families passed mattresses down from one child to another. The risk is tiny but I think that you would both be more relaxed if you put your baby back in the Moses basket for a couple of nights if she still fits safely in this. Many years ago, I took DS into a pub one lunchtime to celebrate his godmother passing her driving test. This was when people could still smoke in pubs. It wasn’t smoky but I was so terrified that DS would die in the night as a result of this that I watched him all night. He is now a strapping 22 year old! Do what feels best for you and your little girl.

Don’t babies share mattresses all the time in nurseries and in hospital? I really wouldn’t worry too much. You won’t have done any harm but I can understand you wanting to order a new one

Sleeping on a nearly-new mattress will not do her any arm!

Some SIDS research suggests that 'stranger' 2nd hand mattress may increase the risk, but as usual the data is poor.

By all means enjoy the new mattress when it arrives but in the meantime have her sleep wherever you are most happy with.

Just think about the kind of conditions the majority of children in the world sleep in....

I think I worried with my first ans bought new mattresses, but have passed them down to the others (not that they would sleep in the cot bed or Moses basket)..these days we have got some second hand mattresses which have been very well cared for - and nothing come of it. For your peace of mind tomorrow give the mattress a good vacuum and a steam clean if you have a steam cleaner. I am guessing they think that it's dust mites that may cause SIDS?

She will be fine. You haven't done her any damage.

If you think you'll freak out about it all night, then put her back in the basket, but honestly, if the mattress doesn't smell of pee or mould, it's very very unlikely to do her harm.

Thousands of children have slept on second hand mattress and have been absolutely fine. The chances that you have done your daughter any harm are incredibly tiny, don't beat yourself up about it.

You've ordered a new mattress and it'll be here soon, in the meantime I'd move her into a travel cot or the moses basket so you aren't lying awake worrying.

From the lullaby trust- which says that the waterproof cover will reduce the risk, but it might be better to put her in the Moses basket, just so that your not up all night worrying.

Consider cots provided in holiday homes and hotels, too. All used by lots of different babies with no ill effects.
