Lost property at school.

3 weeks ago I bought my son a new coat for school. Anyway about a week ago he came out with no coat after school I asked him where it was and he said he left it in the lunch hall. Anyway I asked reception where lost property was and they told me. Only it wasn't in there, I mentioned it again to his teacher as I saw an identical coat hanging up outside another class (same year) well she never did. Aibu to expect it back! If he lost it in school then it should be there yes I get he left it there but he is only 5 and yes it had his name written inside.

Did they check the identical coat to see if it had his your child's name in ? If so then yes you should get it back, many a time I found my DS stuff in another cloakroom . Sometimes cleaners just pop it on a peg

If he left it in the lunch hall, you should have checked there before lost property. It can sometimes take a while before lost items end up there.

The teacher said she would ask whose it is and get back to me but she never did. I'm not sure if it's still there as I spotted it when running late and bringing my son into school otherwise they line up outside with the other children.

If you saw an identical coat hanging up why didn't you check it yourself or ask your DS to check it?

Teachers have far too much to do to hunt for lost property. At DDs school they were happy for me to have a look around after home time for mislaid items, though I accept not all schools will have this flexibility.

Is it named?

Sadly things go missing in schools and as much as most teachers will try to help they haven’t got time to be chasing around School

Not the teachers job to hunt for a lost coat. Go and look yourself.

At this age I used to check all the coats myself as they were all near identical and they constantly mixed them up.

I have to admit as I spotted it his class was coming out to assembly and the other class was still inside so they would see me checking it and if it wasn't the coat. Kicking myself now obviously.

I've looked. I said it wasn't there. I will check the other one but it was from primark so it could just be the same coat. Trouble is I haven't exactly got money to run out and buy a new one and the coat he had on today (his old one) doesn't have a hood and it's raining.

Go and look in lost property again. Ask if you can look in the classroom and cloakroom.

As PP have said, teachers are extremely overworked and do not have the time to look for lost property.

Could someone have stolen it/taken it accidentally? I'd put a shout out on all the fb pages/whatever your school parents use.
This isn't the teachers responsibility, I think they could spend all day looking for stuff otherwise.

You need to go into school and have a good look everywhere.
My DCs primary had 2 lost property places - one for infants and one for juniors. If something had been left in the hall, then it could stay there for a week or more until it was cleaned thoroughly.
If left around school, again it could be more than a week of it being kicked up and down corridors before being chucked in the nearest LP box.
I've even found a coat in the playground two days later, and once a very wet jumper on the school field after a stormy night.
Also check all cloakrooms/hanging areas as if something is on the floor many people will just pick it up and hang on the nearest peg.

Don't even get me started on 'lost property'.

DDs brand new coat went missing. She'd had it a week.
DSs brand new pe kit - vanished.

HT helpfully told DM that the kit wouldn't have gone. which is odd because its fucking nowhere to be seen. Trust me I know, I have searched high and low several times over.

Names in it doesn't matter. Both DCs old school used to just cut the label out of stuff where the the name was and keep it!

DDs other new coat now has her name sewn into the inside of both her pockets in different colours in case this one also goes walkies.

Well I don't think it's my responsibility to find it as I'm not allowed access to just wonder round the school. In the mornings and afternoons they don't like you in the building you drop your kids in the play ground and pick them up from it. I just don't expect it to vanish an I think it's more than likely been taken as it was a brand new coat.

You do need to ask permission though but its fairly easy to get. Mine just goes "can I look in here after school - DC has lost something". They're normally quite amenable.

I'm convinced DDs coat was nicked too OP but unfortunately I can't prove it so had to relent and get her a new one. You won't be able to prove it either and will have to chalk it up as lesson learnt.

I do get where you're coming from though, I'm also in the Too much month at the end of the money camp and begrudge having to shell out for something that's possibly been taken.

Saying that though it IS possible it's been taken home by mistake. You say it's Primark and I can bet there's a fair few wearing the exact same coat. Easily picked up by mistake by another kid on the way to their next lesson or after break time etc.

If it has been taken there's not a lot the school can do anyway.

Mind you, at primary I was always amazed quite how many coats and jumpers there were in lost property at the end of term. At the end of term any unclaimed unnamed jumpers in lost property used to go to the PTA to resell.

Yeh there were a lot of jumpers in the lost property. But Surely if it was picked up by another child then their mum would have spotted it wasn't theirs when picking them up or if it was the same coat there would still be the coat somewhere to be found. It's been a week now so I think that's long enough. Will drop him abit later tomorrow so I can go into the school and check again.

The lost property at my DD's school is a nightmare too, we've had all sorts disappear.
It can usually take up to a week for it to make its way to the lost property.
I have resorted to putting their names is every possible place, I even iron it on the insides of the arms

God I hate this! DS has ‘lost’ 2 jumpers already this year. Both went missing after PE and both were warm sweatshirt type jumpers. Neither have turned up again - I highly suspect someone else is wearing them. He’s Yr1.

Obviously you're not allowed to go wandering round during the day but at pick up just ask to pop in and have a root around. Or in the morning asked to have a look that way all coats should be there.
It's a good idea to secretly label stuff in case it is 'borrowed'

DS lost his coat a couple of weeks ago. I went for a rummage at pick up and found it hanging on the peg of another year group on a different floor of the building.

And not all mums will return the coat, some are just chancers, they see you've got the uniform from somewhere like Debenhams or M&S and just take it for their DC's

It should be in lost property not saying any one has to hunt just keep an eye out. Anyway yes I think after school would be best so I will ask to look today.
