To be fucking pissed off!

Back story. Landlord selling property so served my section 21. I’m a single mum who works part time. Don’t have a guarantor though so had to go to the council for help as the thousands of estate agents I contacted wanted a guarantor. This was 5 months ago.

The council said they can only look for private rent for me, and will pay the first months rent and deposit. I’m ecstatic about that as I wouldn’t have been able to pay that. For 5 months nothing happens. I’m still looking for suitable property everyday. My landlord has had to pay thousands in court fees, I’ve also had to pay towards it, as well as pay for the bailiffs which I’m expecting any day now.

10 days ago the council tells me they can pay an incentive to the estate agent so I won’t need a guarantor. Keep in mind this is 5 months later! A property is found which I love and accept.

I’m told I can move in Friday 24th. So I take the week off work to pack and move (doing it on my own) and book the removal van. Only for the day to arrive and the council haven’t paid the money so I can’t move. I can’t take anymore time off work because it will be unpaid. Worst part is it wasn’t just me. There was another 3 people who was let down. I’ve worked all my live and paid my taxes. I’m not sponging. I just didn’t have a guarantor. How many times can one person let you down?

I dont know what to do about this but I'm fucking livid on your behalf. This is disgusting.

Mulch · 26/11/2017 19:43

Yea I'd be pissed, the housing situation in this country is appalling. Have you tried shelter for advice? They can speak to the council on your behalf

ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsrname · 26/11/2017 19:43

That's terrible! Do you think a formal complaint to the council will help?

HateIsNotGood · 26/11/2017 19:53

Completely awful situation. Besides anymore details you HAVE to go to the Council Offices tomorrow. You are now 'homeless' and if they don't sort it out pronto they have a Duty to house you. What happened to your belongings and the removal van; did you turn up to your new address to be told "no". Never mind that you have work to go to and dc to get to school/childminder. Really, really shit situation.

Fuckitletshavevino · 26/11/2017 19:54

@icannever I have the local MPs interested in my case. It’s much worse than I’ve been able to explain. Unfortunately it has happened over the weekend so can’t contact anyone

@Hatels luckily the removal van was understandable about the situation.

This is awful. OP does that mean you have lost the house you were moving to?

pollythedolly · 26/11/2017 20:15

Bloody hell

Definitely go to Shelter - they can take councils to court so they do take notice when they are involved. You may have to get a referral from Citizens Advice.
Disgusting behaviour by the council. I am sorry this has happened to you. Horribly stressful and expensive.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 26/11/2017 20:20

So sorry. This happened to us and our whole street.

They gave us a date to move the day before called 29 houses to say they were not ready. They would be after christmas.

This was november a week later another call that we could all move in next week. They did land up giving us all 2 free weeks rent due to the costs of cancelations people had paid.

Sorry your going through this movinf is stressful enough.

Fuckitletshavevino · 26/11/2017 20:21

I haven’t lost the flat luckily. But I have to move in around work in the dark. Can’t book removals because it’s dark when I finish work and there is no back light to the property. Gotta go up steel steps.

glenthebattleostrich · 26/11/2017 20:45

Can I suggest you find your local councillor and give them a call. They can put pressure on to help get things moving.

Fuckitletshavevino · 26/11/2017 21:21

@glenthebattle I’m good friends with him. He has helped me so much. The MP’s are backing my case. Unfortunately they are unable to stop the council being tardy

Oh you poor love. Thinking of you....

mellongoose · 27/11/2017 06:19

An MP's office can go to the Head of Service at the Council on your behalf and insist this is sorted. If this was Friday, where are you living now?

Fuckitletshavevino · 27/11/2017 07:47

Thankfully I hadn’t told the landlord of the property I’m being evicted from that I was moving so I’m still here. I’m just hoping the bailiffs don’t turn up when I’m at work today

My phone won’t refresh this thread, so apologise if I’m repeating things.

YY to calling the council and speaking to Shelter OP have you made any progress?

Fuckitletshavevino · 27/11/2017 12:55

I’ve just had a call from the estate agent. The council have paid today so I can collect the keys today. Luckily it’s my day off tomorrow so I’ll do my best to book the removal van for tomorrow and take as much as I can in my car tonight. FINALLY after 5 months the stress and anxiety caused by all this has come to an end Grin
