To eat chicken...

... that's a day out of date?

Chicken wings from Sainsbury's in bourbon BBQ sauce. Not ready to eat, need cooking. Use by date is yesterday, I'm annoyed I didn't bloody check I only bought them in the morning!

They smell fine. I really want them!

Not normally someone who worries about dates (I normally rely on the sniff test for things like milk etc apart from when I was pregnant, then I was more careful) but am a bit wary about chicken.

Would you?

Probably not with chicken, sorry.

DaisysStew · 26/11/2017 19:06

I'd assume with chicken you'd smell if it was rank. If it smells ok I'd have it.

MrsMotherHen · 26/11/2017 19:07

If they smell fine i would go for it

QuestionableMouse · 26/11/2017 19:08

Not smelling bad does not mean that they're safe to eat. There's a reason that the sniff test isn't used in labs... It's completely unreliable.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 26/11/2017 19:09

If you've been keeping it in the freezer it should be fine, in the fridge then give it a sniff first.

rabbitsdontlayeggs · 26/11/2017 19:10

Haven't frozen at all, bought yesterday morning and they went straight in the fridge.

I should imagine they're quite cautious with use by dates, so were I not a vegetarian I would.

witherwings · 26/11/2017 19:10

I would and have done in similar circumstances

ObscuredbyFog · 26/11/2017 20:18

You're cooking it, make sure it's absolutely rostering hot for a good few minutes more than usual, then enjoy it.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 26/11/2017 20:20

I would have no issue with eating them at all.

mercurymaze · 26/11/2017 20:21

of course eat them one day out of date if fine

Floralnomad · 26/11/2017 20:21

I would eat them without a second thought .

Itchytights · 26/11/2017 20:21

I wouldn’t chance it with chicken if it was me.

gamerchick · 26/11/2017 20:22

You know if chickens off while it’s cooking if not when raw. It smells really really bad.

Mum2jenny · 26/11/2017 20:23

Of course I'd eat them, what difference does a day make? There will be plenty of safety stuff built into the use by date, however I prefer to use my nose!

Winetime0909 · 26/11/2017 20:23

Of course you can! Use by dates really are a guideline they'd expect people to be use common sense

rabbitsdontlayeggs · 26/11/2017 20:25

I ate them. They were delicious! I will come back and update you if I've poisoned myself so you sensible people who said no can say you told me so.

They were really yummy though 🐷

Hope you're ok!

PugonToast · 26/11/2017 21:46

I read your title as "To eat Children"

Don't do it OP. It is wrong and evil. If you are really that hungry, you need to rethink your diet.

Hope that helps.

rabbitsdontlayeggs · 26/11/2017 22:19

No children were consumed in the making of this post. Just chicken, and only their wings!

Tinysarah1985 · 26/11/2017 22:23

Does chicken miraculously go off on the stroke of midnight of the use by date?
