Or is next door now a bail hostel?

Next door neighbour is a nightmare. Overgrown garden, rubbish bags stacked high and shoved against our fence so it's bending over plus an old mattress and blocked kitchen drains. He's very aggressive and shouted at me when I asked if he could put his rubbish out for the dustmen. He's started having lodgers, all male. They seem to arrive and move out after a few months. One stood staring at me - sounds silly but he was unnerving - as I stood at my front door talking to a friend. This morning about 8am I saw a man outside next door swinging from a can. Police car turns up and WPC gets out and lets out a dodgy looking specimen who walks off with can swigger into the house. Am I right in thinking this may be some bail hostel/halfway house or just unlucky to live next door to an odd bunch?

To be a bail hostel there has to be planning permission - I believe - seeing as we got letters from the council when they wanted to convert a property to multi ooccupancy

Thanks - guess that means we're just unlucky enough to live next door to Stig of the Dump and his friends. Four bed house and at one stage there were seven men living there.

Sounds as if he’s housing all these people so you could check with the council if he’s registered for multi occupancy? He may not thank you, though..

Bail hostels tend to have management and supervision and quite a lot of rules
YOu are almost certainly unlucky with your neighbours but I do not think that you are living next door to a bail hostel more information

Love the typo by the way I'd love to know how someone "swinging" from a can would manage it :)

I lived close to a half way house in the last place, was awful.

I posted on here about it as one of the inhabitants was fucking with me by burying a tin can in my pots Hmm

It went on for years. In fact even though I've moved 3 times since then I just recently found one when I emptied one of my pots.

Only 7 op! I have 3 bed next to me and every room was turned into bedroom we have 15 or more at one point.

Yes see if its an HMO.

I used to live next door to one. It took me six months to realise and while it was a bit unnerving there were never any issues.

Signs were

  • CCTV front and back
  • Official no smoking signs on the entrance
  • Rotating set of men who looked like you wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley smoking / making calls in the back garden
  • Appeared to be a set of middle aged no nonsense women who managed the place on a rota
  • Final confirmation came from finding its food hygiene rating on the council website

The property and garden was well maintained and in a surprisingly nice area of town

Worst bit was that they wouldn't take in parcels for us despite being there 24/7. If they were going to make us live next to hardened criminals without bothering to tell us, the least they could do was save us a trip to the bloody post office!

Sorry to say but you're just living next door to stig of the dump

Is it worth complaining to the Council about piles of rubbish and stinking old mattress? Lol swinging on a can - images of Stuart Little for some reason!

Yes. Tell them you've seen rats.

wombatron · 24/11/2017 17:54

Was about to say mention rats.... most councils will react quickly to it.

dayswithaY · 24/11/2017 18:15

Will they tell him it was me that phoned them? Really don't want another earful.

I'd be very surprised if they did - and you can always specify that you don't want him told who it was either

whoareyoukidding · 24/11/2017 18:55

How easy would it be for you to move, OP? In my experience, these situations rarely improve and wear you down.
