To expect a winter coat not to rip on tripping

Bought ds1 a winter coat on the weekend from John Lewis at the weekend - not the cheapest option but I usually buy a bit big and they last two years and are then still in good condition for ds2.

He has come home today with a small tear on the sleeve. Apparently he tripped. I am pretty cross - it's very small tear but it won't be properly waterproof and it just feels like money down the toilet now! Ds says he rolled over - I would love to know what actually happened as he says it was on a flat surface. What a fucking waste.

Ds3 ripped the arm of his new coat, last year - I mended it, and it has been fine - no problems with waterproofness (not that that’s a word, but you know what I mean).

I know it’s not ideal, but fabric does rip, and it needn’t be the end of this coat’s usefulness.
