To think this isn't next day delivery?

Ordered an item of clothing online on Monday to wear on Saturday. Item was in stock and I stumped up £9 for next day delivery to be sure it arrived on time. No sign of it yesterday so sent an email around close of business.

Got a reply this morning saying that their next day delivery guarantees receipt by "11/12" - it does say this on the website but (perhaps stupidly) I took this to be the time of delivery rather than short hand for 11th December 2017. Apparently this is because the item isn't actually in stock as displayed on their website so the earliest they can dispatch it is Friday, meaning I will most likely receive it on Monday (this is earlier than they had planned to dispatch on account of my complaining).

They believe their information is clear but surely to be clear you wouldn't have the words "next day delivery" anywhere at all if that wasn't going to happen.

So AIBU to have thought next day delivery would have meant delivery next day and to wonder what delivery costs my £9 is actually covering?

I would certainly push for the delivery charge to be refunded. I don't think it is massively clear, particularly the shorthand version of the date.

Cancel it or tell them you want a refund on the excess P+P you paid for next day delivery.

£9 is ridiculous for a dress!
