At work we have a social staffroom. It drives me nuts when people come into the staffroom at break/lunchtimes and then start having whispery private conversations. if you need to discuss something confidential, go somewhere more appropriate. If you are whispering because you really shouldn't be saying something, then don't say it.

It wouldn't bother me, I would just put my earphones in listen to some music and read the paper. I don't like most of the people I work with though.

Its really rude. There is a woman who does it in our office. I just think, go and discuss it outside if you want to be private, because I personally couldn't give a flying fuck what she is talking about!

It's the insinuation that she doesn't want anyone else to hear, when frankly, nobody cares!

It is very rude. I'd just let them know X-room was empty.

I tend to agree but maybe they are trying to be considerate of others who may not want to be subjected to their conversation?

Maybe it's personal rather than confidential? Like "does my arse look big in this?" or "I've got terrible wind, do you think anyone has noticed?". Better than shouting.

Where I work without giving too much away we have a room where I have my computer but everyone else comes to prepare resources etc. I hate it when people come in and start a whispery conversation if it’s private go somewhere else ! Sometimes I just stomp off in a huff but then I’m just cutting off my nose to spite my face!

Maybe you have the same staff room I do...! It's v inappropriate

Oh Christ, I often speak in a very low voice to people when others are around. It’s just not wanting to force them to listen to my inanities.
